A Hate Crimes Thought Experiment
debbyski
by debbyski  5-9-2009
"I already addressed this sort of nonsensical claim last week, pointing out that things like pedophilia and bestiality are still crimes and passage of hate crimes legislation will have no impact on that because the two issues are utterly unrelated, despite the Right's insulting attempts to conflate the two. The current law merely adds "sexual orientation" to the list of protections, along with things like religion, race, and color, which are currently protected. And, as the re-written paragraph above makes clear, nobody has being turned into a felon under current existing law for rebuffing the Right or speaking out against their agenda ... just as the Right won't be turned into felons if the new hate crimes legislation becomes law."

The 10 Coolest Foreign Words The English Language Needs
merrie
by merrie  5-10-2009
they even teach it in universities, and in the armed forces. They believe this ability to slap together haphazard solutions has been key to their survival over the centuries. Don't laugh. At one time they managed to build an empire stretching from Brazil to the Philippines this way. "Screw" preparation. They have desenrascano. Depression: a Journey Through Darkness
abailart
by abailart  5-10-2009    3
<<< This is the worst part of being at the mercy of your own mind, especially when that mind lists toward the despondent at the first sign of gray: the fact that there is no way out of the reality of being you, a person who is forever noticing the grime on the bricks, the flaws in the friends — the sadness that runs under the skin of things, like blood, beginning as a trickle and ending up as a hemorrhage, staining everything. It is a sadness that no one seems to want to talk about in public, at cocktail-party sorts of places, not even in this Age of Indiscretion. –//– This was enraging in and of itself — the fact that severe depression, much as it might be treated as an illness, didn’t send out clear signals for others to pick up on; it did its deadly dismantling work under cover of normalcy. The psychological pain was agonizing, but there was no way of proving it, no bleeding wounds to point to. . .

Your Blood Cells Are Crawling Inside You
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  5-11-2009
"The white blood cells may use the protrusions for more than just gripping and moving. The legs might also sense signals that let the cells know when to exit from the blood vessel and migrate to damaged tissue, Alon said. Before this study, scientists thought the legs only appeared after the cells left blood vessels. But since the protrusions are also used for crawling, they might help the cells probe for cues that indicate to move across the endothelial barrier and leave the blood vessels, Alon said."
