How altruism evolved over 200,000 years of conflict
einbar
by einbar  6-6-2009
Biologists have argued for decades about the evolution of altruism and long ago came to the conclusion that Darwinian natural selection cannot explain acts of supreme personal sacrifice except those directly connected with helping the survival of close blood relatives who share similar genes.

This is proof of what I'm used to saying to my friends after some experiences and anecdotes from other friends: "Doctors are like mechanics. Some of them are good, some of them not so good, and sometimes you end up doing all the work."

NPR is kicking ass because they "get it"
egoldstein
by egoldstein  6-5-2009    4
I clipped this from a really compreshensive post on mashable.com that discusses how NPR has been defying the rest of the traditional media industry by steadily growing its audience. After reading it, it seems to me that the key here is that they have a CEO who is embracing the changing media landscape instead resisting/ignoring/denying its impact. It seems like such an obvious approach, but one that so many media companies seem unable or unwilling to take.

Social search puts the power of people above the power of algorithms
egoldstein
by egoldstein  6-4-2009
My entire career has been dedicated to the belief that (i) people can do a better job of filtering the information that's available on the web than any algorithms; (ii) serendipitous discovery of information is often more compelling than structured information organized in channels; (iii) people are interested in learning about more topics than they're aware of or have time for but can only do so thru the findings of others. Twitter has proven these to be true on a massive scale. In my opinion, Clipmarks offers a very compelling user experience outside of twitter and amplify is quickly becoming a compelling solution for users of twitter. the game is most certainly not over!
