10 ancient Greek writers you should know
Aribeth
by Aribeth  7-11-2009    5
Archimedes was a mathematician, engineer, inventor, physicist and astronomer. He is known for the invention of The Archimedes’ Screw, a mechanism for moving water that is still in use today. He also calculated the value of pi very precisely. Archimedes discovered how to define the volume of irregular objects by submerging them in water. According to legend, this discovery made him run out on the street naked (he was so excited that he forgot to get dressed) and cry “Eureka!” – I have found it.

"My work often leans toward humour. Finding the humour in things often leads to finding the truth. I like to create absurd situations, by combining things together that don’t belong, or imagine what inanimate objects would say if they could speak. For instance, the pen I am using to write this draft would probably say: "I'm tired. Can we stop for a bit?" Or perhaps it would say: "I can't believe you're making me write this. This is rubbish. Signing cheques would be more inspiring than this." These are the things I think about. I think about alot of things. I think about thinking. Don't try it though, it's not worth it. I use watercolours in ways you shouldn't. I make my own sketchbooks. If I smoked, I'd roll my own. I'd rather draw than rent a movie. Don't try to start a conversation with me about recent films. I haven't seen any. I play the guitar. My artwork and the materials I use are quite compact. You could fit my studio in a large suitcase."

Russian Probe Tried to Beat Apollo to the Moon—But It Crashed

more (at source): The recordings were made over three days at the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Manchester, where researchers used the Lovell Radio Telescope to listen to transmissions from Apollo 11—and Luna 15. Sir Bernard Lovell, the inventor of the telescope and the founder of Jodrell Bank, can be heard narrating events with conversation from the Apollo 11 astronauts in the background. Sir Bernard notes a change in the orbit of Luna 15 to take it closer to the US landing site and later reports a rumour from a “well-informed source in Moscow” that the craft is about to land. People in Jodrell’s control room can then be heard shouting “it’s landing” and “it’s going down much too fast” as they track Luna 15’s final moments before it crashes .

America’s Hidden Treasures

by clip-on-tie  7-10-2009    2
Been to Glacier Bay, Alaska. Beautiful. Going to Alaska will give you a new perspective on life. In some places, you have to put your sun visor down at 3:00 a.m. Or when it warms up to -35 degrees (Fahrenheit) people are outside in short sleeve shirts washing their cars. At Halloween, your costume has to fit over a snowsuit. And people drive for a mile on square tires on a -65 degree morning.

"The DNA Code" - New Research Shows Life Hardwired in the Universe
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-10-2009    2
more: They also match those in simulations of early Earth, and most critically, those simulations were performed by other people. The implications are staggering: good news for anyone worried about how we're alone, and bad news for anyone who demands some kind of "Designer" to put life together - it seems that physics can assemble the organic jigsaw all by itself, thank you very much, and has probably done so throughout space since the beginning of everything. The study indicates that you don't need a miracle to arrive at the chemical cocktail for early life, just a decently large asteroid with the right components. That's all. The entire universe could be stuffed with life, from the earliest prebiotic protein-a-likes to fully DNAed descendants. The path from one to the other is long, but we've had thirteen and a half billion years so far and it's happened at least once.

Dont get in a contest with a train. You lose. You always lose

Terribly sad story. I remember my younger days thinking I was invincible, that nothing or no one could slow me down, get in my way, do me harm, or do me in for good. I was lucky. Play it smart kiddos. Life is short enough. Make it count. Don't be stupid. In a contest with a train, you lose. You always lose.
