POPSThe Possibility of Impossible cultures Heuser suggests that only humans have evolved four computational capacities, constituting a phylogenetic mind gap between humans and other animals. An important perspective, go read all of it

POPSTiny Half Dime Sells For Over One Million Dollars What's really interesting is that Sperber and Legend Numismatics originally bought the coin for $661,250 at an auction in 2004 and then sold to the New Jersey collector. The company re-purchased it five years later for more than double that price, and has already sold it along with the New Jersey man's other half dimes for an undisclosed amount.

POPSFear is literally all in our heads... Over the past few years, thanks to Clipmarks and Amplify, i've had the opportunity to read a lot of clips about how the brain works. I'm fascinated by how powerful it is and how responsible it is for so much human activity - not just cognitive, but emotional as well.

POPSThe Courage to be Wrong Yes, conformity gains you a certain type of approval from others, but it comes at the cost of losing your sense of self. You have to systematically search out everything that’s a little bit “off” about you and bury it as deep as you can. You know that you can’t get rid of it — it’s a part of you, after all — but maybe you can hide it so deep that no one will ever see it, so that a world that only respects the “right” will never realize how “wrong” you really are. Maybe, just maybe, you can fool everyone until you’re in a position of power and no one’s opinion matters anymore. Then you can be free. Right? Umm… no.

POPSJust Be Honest About Your Bigotry, OK? But neither story has proffered that up. So how do these commenters know the couples in question are illegal immigrants? Well, by their last names, of course. Santiago, Rocha and Barron must be indicative of the 100% ne'er-do-wells that crawl under or over a fence in the dark, dark night to invade the soil of the U.S., fostering hate in their hearts and evil in their veins, ready to do horribly heinous crimes at a moment's notice. According to 2007 data from U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration for Children and Families, 21.7 percent of maltreated children nationwide are from African-American families; 20.8 percent are from hispanic families; and 46.1 percent are from white families. So really, in the U.S., being from a white family nearly doubles your chances of being maltreated or abused.

POPSWorld's First PoW Camp? more: Ben Robinson, an archaeologist at Peterborough Museum, has been working with the Channel 4 Time Team programme to uncover the site’s history. He said: “This is a fascinating and unique site because the concept of a ‘prisoner of war camp’ did not exist before Norman Cross was built in 1797. It was an inspired experiment in taking huge numbers of enemy troops out of action, but also keeping them in as humane conditions as possible.” Although the prisoners were generally treated well, more than 1,000 inmates died from typhoid in 1800 and 1801 and a total of 1,770 died during the camp’s 17-year history. The buildings were dismantled and the site cleared after Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

POPSAAbuse of moderation privileges? Seems not [SEE COMMENTS] Antara disemvoweled my comment on her clip because she disagreed with my assertion of the facts. That's abusive and, I believe, against clipmarks policy/terms of use. I disemvowel comments that descend into personal attack, no matter whom. That's been my stated standard from when I started & I've stuck to it.. {{Antara}}, I call your actions dishonest and accuse you of being unwilling to engage in serious debate. Your excuse was I deem this one whiny, dumb but mostly just condescending nonsense ---so you win a vowel free post too! I stated the facts about HLG's arrest, his providing ID, and the racist history of the word "uppity" in America. I didn't make any personal attacks, and I defy you to point to specifically how my comment was "abusive". I call bullshit. I've written to Clipmarks to complain . 7/24/09: CLIPMARKS HAS RESPONDED. See comments.

TNT Caused final extinction of dinosaurs and many other species An asteroid impact with the Earth may have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. The Alvarez Asteroid Theory explains the huge K-T (Cretaceous-Tertiary) mass extinction 65 million years ago by a large asteroid hitting the Earth off the Mexican Yucatan peninsula. This impact would have caused severe climactic changes leading to the demise of many groups of organisms, including non-avian dinosaurs.

POPSAncient Theater Masks Rediscovered in Pompeii more: According to Borriello, the fact that the large plaster masks were all dug up in the same place, might suggest they belonged to an artisan's workshop. A closer look at the artifacts revealed that the plaster was carefully hand-worked. Moreover, some of the masks have their mouth shut, a clear indication that they were used as models for a craftsman who then produced lighter masks for actors to wear.

POPSShrine to Jupiter discovered at UK site more (at source): The inscription reads: “To Jupiter Best and Greatest of Doliche, Sulpicius Pudens, prefect of the Fourth Cohort of Gauls, fulfilled his vow gladly and deservedly.” Jupiter of Doliche’s cult centre was in modern southern Turkey and his worship spread rapidly in the Roman Army, where he was regarded as all powerful and strongly associated with Rome’s Jupiter, king of all the gods. Mr Birley said: “Major altars like this are very rare finds and to discover such a shrine inside the fort is highly unusual. “The shrine also has evidence of animal sacrifice and possible religious feasting. “It all adds to the excitement of the excavations and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most excavators.”

POPSIn the US You Can Be Fired for Who You Marry I think that one of the greatest injustices in the USA is the tenuous nature of employment. In some states you can be fired without any cause whatsoever. Here is a story of man who is fired from his job simply because of who he married even though by all accounts he did a good job. Something completely outside of his employment became the cause for firing him. How is that just? How is that acceptable? Why aren't there laws that protect people from such capricious terminations?
