POPSExpressions that define cultures 9. Maningue Nice, Mozambique A cross between a purely national term and a flair of English, maningue nice means “very nice” and is the closest thing to a slogan in Mozambique. Scream it from the tallest buildings whenever fortune favors you. 10. Bahala Na, Philippines Come What May. A Cross Cultural Theme When I started researching these expressions, I was expecting to find similarities based on geography: patterns in Asia, South America, Western Europe, etc. I was surprised, however, to find a cross-cultural theme; many of these phrases are used in response to circumstances beyond people’s control. How each culture is epitomized in these terms is indicative of how they react to unfortunate or unavoidable events. The Japanese and French suck it up; the Thais, Kiwis, Aussies, and others shrug it off; Arabs put the responsibility to a higher power.

POPSJohn Travolta reportedly scared to leave Church of Scientology According to the report, Travolta has cancelled all work commitments since Jett's death. He reportedly resents going along with Scientology's prescribed treatment for Jett's condition. The church does not recognise autism as genuine, but instead believes it to be merely psychosomatic. The church recommends treatment with vitamins and a detox program, not prescription medicines. It is also reported that the church's response to the teenager's death has been to conduct "intensive sessions" with so-called ethics officers, whose job is to question Travolta and other family members to determine if their "negative influences" caused the tragedy.

POPSAmerica's Hidden Nightmare for its Sick Poor It is part of the paradox that while, for instance, the USA is light years ahead of Europe in research into and treatment of cancers, its basic services lag far behind. The interest in universal healthcare is motivated surely by a response to what is available for the most vulnerable. Whatever, the 'interest' is surely worthwhile, and should be inflected by morality rather thanm rigid political dogma.
