Can you imagine swimming here?

I was doing a little reading on the journeys of David Livingstone in Africa which led me to read a bit about the Victoria Falls (Livingstone is apparently the first Englishman to see the Falls). Here's a video i found that is just remarkable - i can't imagine the combination of exuberance and fear that you must feel while swimming here.

Spider builds life-sized decoys
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-6-2009    1
more: "We predicted that spiders with prey carcass decorations on webs should receive fewer wasp attacks because spiders should be well camouflaged by such objects," says Tso. "To our surprise, spiders on decorated webs received far more attacks than those on undecorated webs." That confirmed that the decorations attracted predators rather than acting as camouflage. However, Tseng and Tso suspected that these decorations might also redirect enough attacks to make them worthwhile.

Mavis Leno: tireless champion of Afghan women's rights
Lexica
by Lexica  7-6-2009    1
More: My parents were not sexist, and my father thought I could do anything in the world and then some. When I was 7, I wanted to be a jockey. My father told me women weren't allowed. I couldn't believe it. I was perfectly willing to fail on my own merits, but to be flunked at birth? What kind of crap was that? That made me insanely angry. I read everything on the original suffragists, and they became my heroines, because the only women who ever did anything in the history textbooks of my childhood were Sacagawea and Betsy Ross and Marie Curie. That's it. And Betsy Ross sewed .

Climate Change: It's Already Too Late
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-7-2009    8
“There is no tipping point, just a slope that gets ever steeper,” writes Lovelock. “Because of the rapidity of the Earth’s change, we will need to respond more like the inhabitants of a city threatened by a flood. When they see the unstoppable rise of water, their only option is to escape to higher ground. We have to make our lifeboats seaworthy now stop pretending there is any way back to that lush, comfortable, and beautiful Earth we left behind sometime in the 20th century.” Dr. James Lovelock Warns the World: Enjoy it While You Can

cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-6-2009    4
more (at source): The legend surrounding the Codex is that one of the monks from the Bohemian Benedictine Monastery had committed a terrible sin and was facing the ultimate punishment from the monastery...... to be walled up alive in is cell. To redeem himself from a terrible slow death, the monk offered a deal to the monastery leaders.....if he were to write the biggest book that the world had ever seen, in one single night, then he should be allowed to live.
