POPSCaution likely at EU summit on Russia BRUSSELS, Belgium: When it comes to action over Georgia, Russia has the European Union over a barrel. In fact, 1.2 million barrels. That's the how much Russian crude is pumped westward everyday down the Druzhba pipeline to fuel Europe's economies. This hard economic reality explains why Monday's emergency EU summit will struggle to produce much more than a slap on the wrist for Russia, despite Europe's exasperation over Moscow's invasion of Georgia and backing for its two separatist regions to break away. The EU gets roughly a third of its oil and about 40 percent of its natural gas imports from Russia.

POPSIsrael and Oil Prices--"Geopolitical" Factors Ignored Israel threatens Iran, oil sets new record high. See the pattern? It happens every time they threaten, or the US does. All these articles show on google search and are dated June 2008, now oil prices are up to $140 per barrel. Yet no one is talking about war-mongering as a factor in high oil prices, even though Iran is the 4th largest exporter in the world. As some would say...Duh! It is not a supply issue. Repeating for the upteenth time, high gas prices are due to: 1. speculative trading 2. dollar devaluation 3. geopolitical issues (war, rumors of war, US war policy, Israel) 4. government debt, increased money supply, war spending. These all tie together and started oil's price surge when the Iraq war began, and not before. War policy drives oil up on the trade floor.

POPSRacial fears in Kentucky Astonishingly frank treatment, followed by text of history summary re: mining companies'/unions' past racism. These views do need to be understood and addressed in order that they not be used to stoke political paranoia. You won't find this in the MSM - only Aljazeera speaks this bluntly.

POPSGirls and Women Women of Iraq have gradually let go of most of their 20th century gains and privileges in the last 4 years of occupation. Iraq turned from a modern country of educated and working women into a divided land of Islamic and ethnic warlords who compete in canceling women from the social realm........Read more Islamic Sharia law: a constant threat against the rights and freedom of women in the Middle East

POPSMusharraf's speech defending martial law You probably know that Musharraf declared martial law on Nov. 2 against the strongly expressed wishes of U.S. and other Western diplomats. The irony is that he claims (quite plausibly, in my view, but I don't know that much about it) to be doing it in order to prevent Pakistan being overrun by violent Islamist agitators, which would be a disaster of unfathomable proportions for the GWOT and U.S. policy generally (not to mention India and Afghanistan). I'm mystified about what the U.S. really wants Musharraf to do.

POPSA Palestinian blogger's disgust at factional fighting A Palestinian student blogger observes that the factional violence in the Palestinian territory is all the more absurd because the PA itself has zero power. Not surprisingly, she blames Israel and the U.S. for building up Fatah's military power and thus for stoking the conflict, but she also blames Hamas.

POPSALJAZEERA ON APOSTACY IN MALAYSIA Open Ended Forum: Everywoman looks at the crime of apostasy; how a baby can be torn from its parents because a Muslim woman dared to marry a non-Muslim.

POPSAljazeera Code of Ethics Residing in and covering such a controversial, war-torn place as the Middle East (and with a worldwide audience rivaling the BBC), the Aljazeera news department bends over backwards to adhere to the strictest possible objectivity in their coverage. Out of all the journalism sites I visited, Aljazeera had the clearest, most concise, and practical code of ethics in place for its contributors.

POPSProtests of Hundreds of Islamists I wonder how Islamist have the time to protest so many things? It seems as tho they sit and wait for something to happen so they can. I would deem them "Professional Protesters". I wonder what would happen if they put that energy and passion toward making the world a better place?
