POPSπ Pi(π) appears where you least expect it. Coincidentally, Pi Day is also the birthday of Albert Einstein, who no doubt knew more than a little about pi. Pi Day celebrants, usually children with an enthusiastic teacher and a varying degree of personal interest in the subject, learn about pi, circles, and, if they're lucky, eat baked pies of various sorts.

POPSIrony on decline ? An interesting read. I believe that irony is a fair measure of an healthy and active intelligence. A steady decline in irony may carry consequences as serious as global warming. It might mean we become rigid thinkers imprisoned within our own conceptions and less inclined towards this highly intelligent mix of critical thinking and humor.

POPSW's Protest Manual: Conservative Treason. The manual demonstrates "that the White House has a policy of excluding and/or attempting to squelch dissenting viewpoints from presidential events," said ACLU lawyer Jonathan Miller. "Individuals should have the right to express their opinion to the president, even if it's not a favorable one." "To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -- Theodore Roosevelt

POPSTrue To His Faith
"Is it possible, I asked, that becoming a priest was a way of avoiding coming to terms with his sexuality? Farrow had, after all, once prayed to God to "please make me normal, please make me normal." I asked if he'd had any relationships while serving as a priest. Yes, he confessed. He seemed near tears and stopped short of sharing the details. But he said it had ended. I wondered again how anyone could go through such an ordeal and remain committed to a church that considers it a sin for a gay person to act on biological urges. Whom do you even talk to for help? I asked." "That's a valid question," he said, but he believes he was addressing his spiritual rather than sexual identity in becoming a priest. Among the critics in his own parish and beyond, there are those who quote the Bible to condemn homosexuality and gay marriage. "The Bible is not a book, it's a library written over 15 centuries," Farrow told me, suggesting that Christianity has and should continue to evolve

POPSFake eye - prosthetics from 4,800 years ago. Harris said the primary reason for the artificial eyeball would not have been medical. "She could have worn a patch, but perhaps her family wanted her to look her best for public appearances," he explained. Damn the wealthy!!;) I'm sure all the other girls back then would have wanted the fake eye too.

POPSThe Financial Cost of Feeling "Lerner says she and her colleagues worry about this, and their many media appearances since the study was announced are in part an effort to help make consumers more aware. That way, says Lerner, when people shop, “they aren’t victims of their sad moods"

POPSWhy Atheists are So Smart Thus when Christopher Hitchens and other atheists routinely dismiss religious claims on the grounds that "what can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence," they are making what philosophers like to call a category mistake. We learn from Kant that within the domain of experience, human reason is sovereign, but it is in no way unreasonable to believe things on faith that simply cannot be adjudicated by reason. When atheists summarily dismiss the immortality of the soul or the afterlife on the grounds that they have never found any empirical proofs for either, they are asking for experiential evidence in a domain which is entirely beyond the reach of experience. In this domain, Kant argues, the absence of evidence cannot be used as the evidence for absence. Notice that Kant's argument is entirely secular: It does not employ any religious vocabulary, nor does it rely on any kind of faith.

POPSNation Finally Shitty Enough To Make Social Progress I know the Onion is satire but this strikes much too close to home to be labeled mere satire. As we enter a new era of equality for all people, the election of Barack Obama will decidedly be a milestone in U.S. history, undeniable proof that Americans, when pushed to the very brink, are willing to look past outward appearances and judge a person by the quality of his character and strength of his record. So as long as that person is not a woman.

POPSSettlement in anti-Bush T-shirt case I always thought that the right to protest was not challenged in this country. I guess I was a little naive on this point. Amazing how you can just assume that you have rights in a free America......then, something comes along that makes you realize not to let your guard down, or you might find yourself in an America that you don't recognize anymore. Good thing we got the ACLU to counteract the bullies who want control over the masses....at any cost......including the degradation of the U.S. Constitution. Bush and the boys have been doing this sort of thing for the past seven years.

POPSLove it - Giulliani sliding in Florida His biggest mistake was not realizing that the more people got to know him, the more they'd see what a phony he is. His best strategy would have been to be everywhere - make little appearances t talk about what a hero he is (at least he thinks so) and then get out of town.

POPSGay for Today A remarkable website, revealing the lives and works of fascinating gay or bisexual men from "recent" history (19th C to present day). Featured by birthday, but also categorized by personal characteristics and/or work. "Some of the people featured are highly significant figures to the gay community for their creativity or activism." "Some are highly significant figures in their fields - art, music, science, literature, politics, whatever - who happened to be gay. Sometimes their homosexuality is irrelevant; often it has a part to play in creating that sense of difference or 'otherness' that marks out the genius, the maverick, the innovator. Sometimes, the friendships created by shared homosexuality have created or been significant in whole movements - dance , poetry, writing, art and music all have examples of this." "If you are gay, know your culture. If you are not, know that your world would not be the same without us." Kudos to Peter Rivendell for creating Gay For Today

POPSMcCain Team: Voters Don't Care if Palin Knows the Issues There you go. Sarah Palin isn't a candidate, she's a propaganda delivery system. If they feel they need to isolate her from the press, what the hell are they going to do about the VP debate? Sarah Palin is looking more and more like a Dan Quayle-style empty suit lightweight every day.

POPSScientology - 17 Years Ago Clip from a Times cover story in 1991. Due to the recently released Tom Cruise video on YouTube. I thought this clip from 17 years ago was appropriate. Scientology is still here. Why? If you have the interest I'd suggest clicking on the main web page. This short clip is only the tip of the iceberg.
