Obama's Commitment to Israel
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  1-5-2009    2
I will bring to the White House an unshakable commitment to Israel's security. That starts with ensuring Israel's qualitative military advantage. (APPLAUSE) I will ensure that Israel can defend itself from any threat from Gaza to Tehran. Defense cooperation... (APPLAUSE) Defense cooperation between the United States and Israel is a model of success and it must be deepened. As president, I will implement a memorandum of understanding that provides $30 billion in assistance to Israel over the next decade, investments to Israel's security that will not be tied to any other nation. Finally, let there be no doubt: I will always keep the threat of military action on the table to defend our security and our ally, Israel. Do not be confused. (APPLAUSE) Israel has maintained a vibrant and open discourse and a resilient commitment to the rule of law. Like the United States, sets an example for all when it seeks a more perfect future.

Rerouting Brain Function
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  12-23-2008
I, for one, am not particularly astonished by this as we know from other experiments and observations of brain damaged people that the brain has the capacity to reroute and use other areas of the brain as substitutes for the damaged areas. Still, this is an interesting article that bears further investigation.

When giving gifts, the price is wrong
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  12-12-2008    3
In three different investigations of gift exchanges among adults, the researchers consistently found that givers wrongly assumed that money spent on gifts buys recipients’ appreciation. “I suspect we’d see different results if we studied gift appreciation among children,” Flynn predicts. Kids, more than adults, focus primarily on the nature of a gift rather than its source. Gift givers reported that relatively expensive purchases best conveyed their thoughtfulness and consideration, the Stanford researchers say. Givers apparently spent more on gifts to impress recipients with the givers’ caring, not their cash, the researchers suggest. Yet recipients preferred gifts that they really needed or that had special personal meaning, regardless of price.

Knife switch causes actor to slit his own throat on stage
cakebelly
by cakebelly  12-12-2008    3
continues: One officer told Austrian TV news: "The rumours are wild, with some claiming that he was the victim of jealous rival. "We don't know anything for sure yet; we have to work through everyone." The knife was reportedly bought at a local shop; one possibility is that the props staff forgot to blunt its blade. "The knife even still had the price tag on it," an investigator said. After emergency treatment at a hospital, Hoevels declared that the show must go on, and returned to the stage on Sunday night with a bandage tied around his neck, ready to once again meet his mock demise.

Anti-intellectual Presidency book review
abailart
by abailart  11-28-2008    3
One might also question whether public engagement with policy issues was, in truth, significantly higher when presidential speeches were pitched higher. How many ordinary Americans could wax eloquent about the pros and cons of the gold standard in the 1890s, despite the fact that orators of the level of William Jennings Bryan were making the rounds? The electorate that listened to Wilson went on to elect Harding, partly because he was handsome and partly because he made speeches high on pathos. Moreover, his “return to normalcy” mantra used a word many considered not even to exist. Nevertheless, amid the impressionistic plaints so common against the dumbing down of American culture, The Anti-Intellectual Presidency is a useful empirical demonstration of one facet of a larger cultural transformation. In our come- as-you-are America, Dick Cheney’s response to an interviewer’s observation about widespread public opposition to the war in Iraq with “So?” is business as usual. We might di

Obama Speechwriter Switches to McCain
merrie
by merrie  11-3-2008    5
One day after a hearing on Darfur, we were walking back to the office. I was still hobbling from a very bad ankle injury and in a very kind and gentle way he offered his arm when we approached the stairs. But later in debate preps and phone conversations and meetings, I realized that I had made a mistake. I didn’t belong. No matter how hard I tried, my heart wasn’t in it anymore. ...The final straw came the other week when Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher (a.k.a Joe the Plumber) asked a question about higher taxes for small businesses. Instead of celebrating his aspirations, they were mocked. He wasn’t “a real plumber,” and “They’re fighting for Joe the Hedge-Fund manager." Having worked in politics, I know that absolutely none of this is on the level. This back and forth is posturing, a charade, and a political game. These lines are what I refer to as “hooker lines”—a sure thing to get applause and the press to scribble as if they’re reporting meaningful news.

Spreading the wealth? US already does it
lifecyce1898
by lifecyce1898  10-22-2008
the gap between rich and poor Americans has grown markedly in recent years as middle-class wages remained largely stagnant while corporate profits and high-earners' salaries soared. McCain, like President Bush, wants to "give more and more to those with the most, and hope prosperity trickles down to everyone else." The RNC is counting on us being ignorant enough to vote against our own interests, and why shouldn't they? It's been working for a long time.

Jonathan Leibowitz....such a small man; in mentality and vocabulary. FTA: "The media has devoted hundreds of stories of late to the tenor of audience comments at McCain-Palin rallies, fretting about "rage" and "incitement" by the campaign, but the only account of Stewart's appearance is a one-sentence mention in the Boston Globe, and his abusive Palin comments are not included." I guess his Moma would be so proud.

Impeached Federal Judge Alcee Hastings' Stupid Rant
merrie
by merrie  9-25-2008    1
Hastings, who is African-American, was explaining what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the presidential race. “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through,” Hastings added as the room erupted in laughter and applause. Let's face it. There is no way a Republican could say anything this foul and still have a career. Then again... There aren't any impeached Republican judges currently serving in the US House. The New Editor has more on this disgusting attack on Sarah Palin by a Democratic leader. To Florida Democrat Rep. Alcee Hastings, people who own guns and hunt apparently hate Jews and Blacks. Seriously. And 'enlightened' people who hear a politician say this react by laughing and cheering. From CNN: (via Hot Air) (emphasis added) http://www.theneweditor.com/index.php?/archives/8579-Another-Democrat-Says-Something-Stupid-About-Sarah-Palin.html

While the United States and Israel left their ambassadorial seats empty, here is the Jew-hatred greeted by enthusiasm at today’s U.N. In its entire history, the United Nations General Assembly has never adopted a resolution dedicated to denouncing and combating the scourge of antisemitism in all its forms. Now we know why. Less than half of U.N. members are fully free democracies and among them there is no consensus that discrimination and demonization of Jews and the Jewish state is wrong. On the contrary, at the U.N. vicious antisemitism is met by a round of applause. — Anne Bayefsky is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute and at Touro College. Heard on the Hill: Rollcall News: Senator Chris Matthews?

Saying What Holly-wouldn’t. Sunday’s screening of the Hollywood-goes-conservative film “An American Carol” brought out some of the movie’s principals, including Kevin Farley (brother of the late “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Chris Farley), Jon Voight and producer David Zucker, for some conservative laughs. Actor and outspoken Republican Kelsey Grammer, who plays Gen. George Patton in the film, appeared in a video to address the crowd. Grammer, who recently had a heart attack, got applause from the audience when he told them that “against doctor’s orders, I watched a little of the coronation coverage. I mean convention coverage,” referring to the Democrats’ Denver confab in which they named Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) their main man.

Pennsylvania Gov. Rendell: Obama Coverage Was "Embarrassing"

At that point, PBS's Judy Woodruff, who was moderating the moderators event, said: "Why don’t we let Governor Rendell sit down." That was met with applause from the crowd of big-time media figures, which included Arianna Huffington, Gwen Ifill, Al Hunt, and Chuck Todd. Woodruff allowed Brokaw to respond, and in defending the network, he said that Matthews and Keith Olbermann are "not the only voices" on MSNBC.
