Alternative Employment for Disabled People
rachaelkeriwilliams
by rachaelkeriwilliams  1-6-2009    1
Social Firms are needed to employ people with disabilties who have higher than base-level skills. Why would someone who was a doctor want to assemble curtain rods for a living after a minor head injury? I think it is telling that when you apply for TANF, food stamps, or medicaid in the US the only information they collect from you about your educational background is a box that you check if you "have your GED or completed highschool." There is no place for you if you have a PhD and need help getting back to work. It doesn't fit into the myth that people are in poverty because they lack education, personal savings, or motivation. In reality, we are all just playing musical chairs.

Different conflicts demand different resolutions
balthazarus
by balthazarus  1-1-2009    1
The first interesting result was that offering money or material goods in exchange for sacred ones did not make the sacred goods less valuable but more. Expressions of anger and disgust and of the willingness to use violence actually rose among moral absolutists when a deal involving giving up some sacred value was sweetened with material incitements, the second, more optimistic, result was that the absolutists who rejected with contumely the offer of profane money (or peace) for sacred landwould accept deals that involved their enemies giving up things that they considered sacred . The paper cites both Israeli and Hamas leaders saying that they could make peace if only the other side would apologise for 1948, or recognise formally Israel's right to exist. Demanding this kind of wholly intangible mutual surrender of pride makes no sense on a utilitarian calculus, and yet it may be the only thing to unlock the situation.

Never ask yourself what you have learnt … Only ask yourself what are the circumstances which are different from last year. In that way, you can apply last year's lessons. Experience means that the ground is prepared. As in Hamlet's last lines, 'The readiness is all.' "

One ounce of THC? I'm confident that an ounce of prime bud has only a percentage of an ounce of THC content, and that while an ounce of hash has more, it too is less than 100% THC.

An Introduction To CO2 Scepticism
merrie
by merrie  12-29-2008    1
. . . . to other possible explanations as to what has made our climate change and also to voice an educated opinion against the unscientific and unsubstantiated reasoning behind "green taxation" which is supposed to stop so called "Man Made Climate Change". A Green Tax on pollution is one thing but not in the name of reducing climate change. This site is for those of us who believe that man has no control over our climate, just the contamination of the food and air we breathe. CO2 Sceptics will actively promote the proposition that there is no such thing as "Man Made Climate Change", until the World's Governments recognize that Climate Change and Man Made Pollution are two separate issues and not part of the same problem as currently promoted by "Climate Change Journalists" and Government funded scientists. We are also in direct contact with several leading people who support this cause and they will drop in from time to time to answer some of your questions.

More UPDATE on Co-Op Raided in Rural Ohio
Maxwell_Smart
by Maxwell_Smart  12-28-2008
It is too bad they didn't have video cameras rolling to capture the raid. Here is some video of a raid and probably more in line with what happened. In this video the IRS forgot the PC with all the video images of their raid. The raid entailed keeping more than 20 workers handcuffed, in 106-degree heat without shade or water while agents collected records and equipment, which is described in this interview with great detail. The trial resulted in zero convictions on 161 charges faced by nine defendants, a major win for William Cohan and Robert Kahre. http://www.american-synergy.com/Learning/Video/Tyranny/Video-To_Hell_and_Back.htm

Google generation has no need for rote learning
balthazarus
by balthazarus  12-3-2008    2
He suggests that the brains of young people today work differently from those of their parents. He argues that digital immersion, in which children may be texting while surfing the internet and listening to their MP3 player, can help them to develop critical thinking skills. on the other hand: a core level of knowledge was essential: “It’s important that children learn facts. If you have no store of knowledge in your head to draw from, you cannot easily engage in discussions or make informed decisions.” Michael Gove, the Shadow Schools Secretary, has recently criticised “the move away from fact-based learning”, arguing that “knowledge, intellectual capital, is what makes educational progress possible”. We are amidst new era, and new challenges. i do think that the way people feel and think today cannot be directly deduced from past generation and conceptions. How to implement the changes, how to direct them, is the most interesting riddle.

Report: Bush, Rumsfeld Responsible for Detainee Abuse
Wisco
by Wisco  12-11-2008    1
The article tells us: The Bush administration, which has not yet commented on the report, has repeatedly said detainees in U.S. custody are treated humanely, and that because they are enemy combatants, and not prisoners-of-war, they are not entitled to the protections of the Geneva Conventions. That never made any sense to me; the Bush argument was always "We can abuse detainess because Geneva doesn't apply, but we're not." Why make the argument that the Geneva Conventions don't apply if you're not planning to violate them? Why even bring it up? We now have proof of the freakin' obvious...

The Holler-Day Season
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  12-8-2008
The season of silliness is upon us. The Christian Holiday bunkers are in place and they've donned their battle fatigues. Under the Righteous O'Reilly Banner they are marching off to defend the True Believers against the vast (imaginary) hordes of heathens storming the Sacred Christmas Gates. "Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war..." Must leave now. I have creches to target with my arsenal of godless barbs. Happy Holidays!
