POPSGirlfriend This word is older than I thought (I thought both uses originated in the 1950s, but the "female friend" use goes back to 1859 and the "female romantic partner" use goes back to 1892. OED lists a 1896 use of "boy-friend" (male friend usage, which you never hear today) and a 1909 use of "boy-friend" in the romantic sense.
