Openning the door for genetic markets
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-19-2008
 1) The new regulations do not cover cloned animals, most pets or research animals. The FDA has already determined that clones -- genetic replicas -- are safe. Pets and research animals are unlikely to enter the food chain 2) Only one genetically engineered animal is now being sold in the United States, the glow-in-the-dark zebra fish for aquariums. The FDA approved it because it is not eaten and its need for warm water effectively precludes its escape into the wild 3) Technically, it is not the modified animals but the added DNA segments that are considered drugs

Japan's Taiiji Dolphin Hunt Protest
papananook
by papananook  8-21-2008    1
This despicable hunt must be stopped, somehow. The Taiji dolphin hunts continue to prosper because the fishermen receive immense profits from selling some of their victims to the captive dolphin industry. The government also gives the fishermen permission to continue the hunt because they consider the dolphins pests who eat too much of the fish stocks around Taiji. Take Action for Dolphins Ask the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums to expel members who accept dolphins from drive fisheries. Information on attending Japan Dolphin Day rallies worldwide on September 3, 2008. Secret Slaughter No Longer Now, a new documentary is in the works which will hopefully alert a greater portion of the public to what is going on in Taiji. Entitled "The Rising," it was filmed secretly by members of the United States conservation group Ocean Preservation Society (OPS) with help from the Save Japan Dolphins coalition. The footage displays the horrible cruelty dolphins are forced to e

Scientists Create World's Thinnest Balloon
Mohir
by Mohir  8-7-2008
Other potential applications include hyper-fine sensors and ultra-pure filters. "Once you have a membrane that won't let anything past, the most interesting thing is to then poke a hole in it. Then you can detect what leaks through that hole with high sensitivity, or make sure only what you want leaks through that hole," McEuen said. The only way gas leaked out from inside the balloons was through the glass that the bubbles were anchored on, McEuen explained.

Octopus vs Rubik’s cube
Mohir
by Mohir  7-9-2008
No one has suggested that any of the octopuses will actually solve the puzzle, but there’s a very slim chance they might. At the risk of re-igniting the now dormant ‘Echinoderms or Molluscs’ blog war, show us a starfish that can do that…

Animals experience old age in captivity
kelvin273
by kelvin273  6-22-2008
This is interesting because I remember hearing that the conventional wisdom was that animals don't age. Maybe animals really do age, but they usually don't live long enough for it to show.

NASCAR Driver Leaves His Mojo At The Zoo
gingembre
by gingembre  5-23-2008    2
What will Tony Stewart do without his Mojo? :D A better question: what was he doing with Mojo in the first place? Hopefully Dwyer's public service announcement that "primates and wild animals don't make good pets" will discourage others from making the same mistake.

Fungus threatens mass extinction of frogs and other amphibians
zizzy
by zizzy  1-1-2008    2
In addition to their intrinsic value, they offer many benefits and are a critical part of a healthy world. They play an important role in the food web as both predator and prey, eating insects which benefits agriculture and minimizes disease spread. Their skin also has substances that protect them from some microbes and viruses, offering promising medical cures for a variety of human diseases. The outcome of the Amphibian Ark project will be that we will have saved hundreds if not thousands of species from extinction. We also will have developed a capacity both within our institutions and globally to continue to provide amphibian species with care and protection when needed, formed a true partnership between offsite and onsite components of conservation, and demonstrated to the world that zoos and aquariums are essential conservation organizations.”
