(full at source): Honey, we're shrinking the species Bigger is so 20th century. Ecologists say global warming will shrink species, as bigger creatures will have more problems losing heat. And conservationists say we need to plan now if we are going to save large species from extinction.

Clock Ticking on Global Warming
Wisco
by Wisco  12-15-2008    12
Call this a companion to my morning post . The piece tells us: here are powerful political and economic realities that must be quickly overcome for Obama to succeed. Despite the urgency he expresses, it's not at all clear that he and Congress will agree on an approach during a worldwide financial crisis in time to meet some of the more crucial deadlines. Repeat this as often as you can; "the environment and financial crises have the same solution."

Betting With A Climate Scientist ~ An Open Challenge to David Barber
merrie
by merrie  12-15-2008    1
I am concerned about climate exaggerations and the effect they have on public policy makers. It seems quite clear that David Barber was off the mark when he predicted that “this year that the North Pole may be free of ice for the first time,” because neither the Arctic Ocean, the Arctic Basin nor the North Pole were ice free this past summer. David Barger is a smart guy and evidently an expert in his field. Taking on a wager with an amateur like me should be like shooting fish in a barrel. I look forward to reaching an agreement soon. In the post at Climate Sanity it is pointed out that based on the facts it is almost impossible for the Arctic to be ice free anytime soon. Plus that it is hardly a new ocurrence despite the rantings of David Barber. American Nuclear subs have been photogrpahed at the North Pole in ice free water in 1959 and 1962. http://climatesanity.wordpress.com/2008/12/10/arctic-sea-ice-gone-by-2015-a-challenge-to-david-barber/

Forget the Polar Bears -- The Climate Crisis Is About All of Us
brightlight4
by brightlight4  12-9-2008
Forget the sodding polar bears: This is about all of us. As the ice disappears, the region becomes darker, which means that it absorbs more heat. A recent paper published in Geophysical Research Letters shows that the extra warming caused by disappearing sea ice penetrates 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) inland, covering almost the entire region of continuous permafrost. Arctic permafrost contains twice as much carbon as the entire global atmosphere. It remains safe for as long as the ground stays frozen. But the melting has begun. Methane gushers are now gassing out of some places with such force that they keep the water open in Arctic lakes through the winter. The effects of melting permafrost are not incorporated into any global climate models. Runaway warming in the Arctic alone could flip the entire planet into a new climatic state. The Middle Climate could collapse faster and sooner than the grimmest forecasts proposed. Barack Obama's speech to the U.S. climate summit last wee

The Puzzle of Frozen Gas

I read "The Puzzle of Frozen Gas", page 30 Maclean's June 30/08 while waiting for my wife in a Dr.'s office. Got me doing a bit of research. Looks like methane from gas hydrates is an even bigger global warming threat than CO2.

Save The Whales Trapped In Arctic Ice
merrie
by merrie  11-24-2008    2
For example this emailer identifying herself as Pamela Lewis, who claims a scientific background: Dear Sir: I have a degree in astrophysics. I suggest that you spend money and go to Greenland, the North Pole and Antarctica and see the climate change for yourself. Instead you degrade scientists and don't care about the future of this country. I feel sorry for you and your lack of knowledge. Instead you rather destroy your childrens' future and this planet's future. If you believe in God, shame on you for not taking care of this planet. You would rather see it destroyed. I believe in God and believe in saving the planet as the Lord said we are keepers of this planet. If you don't then you must believe in greed, hatred and hostile racism towards President Elect Obama. Grow up and do scientific studies yourself. Hat tip: Bruce Thompson

Polar Bears are Starving

What is the future for Arctic sea ice? Some scientists believe that in just five years, the Arctic may be ice-free during the summer. No-one can say either whether it is a trend that will continue to worsen, or a natural cycle that will eventually be reversed.
