This is the only plan that would allow the American taxpayers to receive the full $2.6 trillion in lease payments, royalties and corporate taxes that some estimate will be generated from full exploration of the OCS. But the all-of-the-above plan does not end there. It also opens up the 10.3 billion barrels of oil estimated to be in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. A 2007 study by the University of California estimated that leases and royalties from ANWR would generate $251 billion in government and state revenue — and that was assuming a barrel of oil cost $53. Oil opens at $102 a barrel today. Alternative energy is not ignored either. The Republican plan also attempts to improve energy conservation with tax credits for businesses and families who purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles. Barriers to the revival of the nuclear power industry are removed, and the tax credits for renewable energy (including but not limited to wind, solar and hydrogen) are part of the plan.

POPSAlaska: "Tip of the Spear" on Climate Change This week's National Journal looks at topic of climate change from an Alaskan perspective. Story quotes Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who describes Alaska as the "tip of the spear" on climate change. Says she: "Clearly, climate change is there; it's real. We can see it happening in Alaska more so than in other parts of the country." Murkowski, the story notes, also advocates opening Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil and gas development, dedicating a portion of the resulting royalties to subsidize new energy sources such as wind, geothermal, and so on.

She supported a non-binding referendum for a constitutional amendment to deny benefits to homosexual couples. Alaska was one of the first U.S. states to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage, in 1998, along with Hawaii. Palin has stated that she supported the 1998 constitutional amendment.

POPSAmerica: Don't Wait For Pelosi, Seize Our Energy Future Now! Only today, they have energy as a weapon. One premise of the new Putin Doctrine is that oil prices will stay high and that Russia, with its plentiful reserves, can use oil profits to fund its global ambitions. This is where Congress comes in. Since President Clinton refused to allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in 1995, Democrats have stood in the way of any rational energy plan. Today, we pump just 25% of our oil; 40 years ago, it was 60%. We send about $900 billion a year overseas to buy oil, money that helps fund Russian and radical Islamic mischief. This is a problem. Now for the good news: The U.S. is the world's largest potential oil supplier — with as much oil, the Institute for Energy Research says, as has been used by the entire world over the last 150 years. Just offshore, we have 86 billion barrels of crude. The U.S. Arctic region, including Alaska, holds 30 billion barrels. In the Far West, we have more than 800 billion barrels of shale oil.

POPSThe Five GOP Senators Killing The Energy Issue For Americans The WSJ explains that by "riding voter discontent over high gas prices, the GOP has made antidrilling Democrats this summer's headlines." But, along comes the Gang of 10, complete with five GOP senators who are quite eager to stick it to conservatives and cave in to the Democrats. The plan is a Democratic giveaway. New production on offshore federal lands is left to state legislatures, and then in only four coastal states. The regulatory hurdles are huge. And the bill bars drilling within 50 miles of the coast -- putting off limits some of the most productive areas. Alaska's oil-rich Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is still a no-go. The highlight is instead $84 billion in tax credits, subsidies and federal handouts for alternative fuels and renewables. The Gang of 10 intends to pay for all this in part by raising taxes on . . . oil companies! The Republican Five has potentially given antidrilling Democrats the political cover they need to neutralize energy through November.

"Releasing oil from the Reserve is a tool to manage our national and economic security, and when judiciously used will in no way jeopardize national security," the California Democrat wrote. Thus, Democrats favor exploration of the SPR, which is supposed to be used only for catastrophic shortages, but believe that drilling for oil in the U.S. is "a hoax". Can someone explain to me why Democrats only hate oil that's made in America? Update: "Obama releases Exxon ad and hopes no one notices it's a lie"... You just can't make this stuff up... POPSUS Oil Companies Shamelessly Increase Exports Their exports to other countries are surging while they complain about drilling access. How about some honesty now from republicans (instead of circling the wagons as if Big Oil are pure saints), let's hear them criticize this policy of the oil companies while they complain of insufficient supply (e.g. "its OPECs fault")! Would be glad to hear any attempts at defending this export policy, which can only contribute to an increase in the price of gas here. Forgive us for complaining now about excessive profits when they are the ones limiting our domestic gas supply! (I have no objection to increase drilling either, but weary of the mantra that is blind to the truth).

POPSIt's So Simple But People Won't Do It People talk a lot about wanting to save energy, lower oil/gas prices, and be more environmentally friendly, but most of it is just that - talk. People want to appear like they want to make a difference because it's become socially unacceptable to appear not to care. But when it comes to taking action, if it impacts people's current lifestyle in any way - even the smallest bit - most people won't do it. Consider driving 60-65 MPH on the freeway instead of 75-80, and going slower on the accelerator. If everyone did this, the savings would be HUGE - but of course people feel they have to get where they're going 30 seconds sooner and need to show of the power of their engines, so they won't do it.

In response to skyrocketing gas prices, liberals say, practically in unison, "We can't drill our way out of this crisis." What does it mean? Finding more oil isn't going to increase the supply of oil? It is the typical Democratic strategy to babble meaningless slogans, as if they have a plan. Their plan is: the permanent twilight of the human race. Liberals complain that -- as Obama put it -- there's "no way that allowing offshore drilling would lower gas prices right now. At best you are looking at five years or more down the road."This is as opposed to airplanes that run on woodchips, which should be up and running any moment now.
