POPSHigh Quality Journalism The big reason you aren't seeing the public shedding many tears over the demise of the NYT is that we all know that they've dug their own grave. The impending demise of the NYT isn't tragedy, it's justice.

POPSThree White People Who Won't Be Voting For Barak Obama People still keep talking about how racism among "working class whites" (that's media code for "po' white trash") will not vote for Obama because he is black. I'm getting seriously tired of this. Working class people in America aren't any more racist than the class of Americans who are too wealthy to work. Sure, there are some people who are racist and won't vote for him, and that shocks people so it gets a lot of attention. But seriously, look at these three guys: do you think they vote AT ALL? (remember, something like 60% of America doesn't!) Nobody is talking about all the working class whites who had trouble voting for John Kerry or Al Gore. If Obama loses, it will be because of the pathetic Democratic Party itself, not because he is black.

POPSConsumer Protectionism May Hurt Your Local Thrift Store How difficult will it be to find second hand children's clothes in the next year? Will your favorite second hand store or your local thrift store be forced out of business due to a new law that says certain children's clothes (for kids 12 and younger) will now (all) have to be tested before sold (although, giving them away may be allowable)? There was too much to clip, but a lot of interesting and important information at the original site. Thanks to my girl, betmo (http://betblue.blogspot.com/2009/01/poor-folks-screwed-again.html) and my friend John G for the heads up!

POPSMinimum Wage I mean why not make the minimum wage $100 an hour. $150 an hour. $1000 an hour. That way everybody gets to be a millionaire!

POPSComing soon: Fatwa on yoga Soon what color one can, or cannot, use may just be the subject of these folks... As if there aren't enough problems in this world to worry about. Talk about extreme micromanagement....

POPSSurvival of the Weak and Scrawny very interesting article on "reverse evolution" - i certainly recommend going to the source to read the full text. Some things just can't be adequately clipped in 1000 characters or less.

POPSFranken is the Official Winner -- Unofficially The problem is that, according to Minnesota law, nothing can be certified while legal challenges are still in the works. It's hard to find fault with that -- it seems like a pretty common sense provision to me. But it's frustrating as all hell that the 2008 elections still aren't over. Coleman's suit to bring in some 650 challenged ballots was turned down by the Minnesota Supreme Court, but is almost certain to be appealed to the federal level. So, officially, we can start saying Senator Franken. But we can't say incumbent Senator Franken. Confusing? You bet.

POPSHolloywood's Conservatives It is sad that they feel that they will no loger get work once their political views are known. Ah, the intolerance of the left

POPSFighting Off Depression It wasn't so long ago that one particular clipper argued with me long and hard that we weren't even in a recession. Quite frankly, IMHO, I am deeply concerned about our economy.

POPS70% Fewer Reporters Covering Legislature than 15 Years Ago That traditional news gathering is abandoning political reporting certainly is news, but it does not account for the rise of the professional (or talented armature) blogger who do more than commentary but actually gather news. Nor does it take into account that interest groups are more able to keep their members informed about what is going on legislatively than they have in the past.

POPSDay 9 of the War, Sunday, January 4, 2009
The daughter-in-law arrived at the family's home an hour before the bombing. When Nizar Riyan saw that she arrived, he laughed and asked her, "why did you come, do you want to die as a "shihada" (a martyr)?" Of course, she answered in the affirmative. A bit later, Riyan and his children swapped jokes about death and martyrdom. Riyan complained that his children aren't prepared to die with him, yet the stated they were prepared. "We will live together, or die together", his children said. His youngest son said that he wassn't willing to live without his father, so he also wanted to die a martyr like is father, and enter paradise in the afterlife. Afterwards, some of his children said that the bodies of the casualties are taken to the morgue and kept in a freezer. "I want to be buried right after I'm killed, so I can go straight to heaven", said Riyan. Afterwards, his daughter-in-law left the house, and the house was bombed by the IAF, killing Riyan and his family.

POPSI has a sweet potato! or, Dogs And Root Vegetables Do Not Mix Well Hysterically funny. More: Me: *chases dog, retrieves most of sweet potato, less the portion which has disappeared into dog's gullet* Dog: See? STARVING. Me: ...That can't be good for you. It's a RAW SWEET POTATO. Dog: I had to do it. I haven't been fed. Ever. Me: You realize you aren't normal. Normal dogs don't steal raw sweet potatoes. Dog, sadly: I was badly brought up. Me: Yes. Yes, you were. Dog: By people who starved me. Me: Oh, no. I am not doing this again. Me: *exits the room, bearing sweet potato* Me: Oh, for the love of GOD. Me: *heads off to the kitchen* Dog: I am not eating a raw sweet potato. Me: You have sweet potato parts all over your snout. Dog: But you don't actually SEE a raw sweet potato, do you? So maybe that's just - um. A birthmark. Me: Did you seriously eat a whole sweet potato? Dog: You don't listen. I told you, I wasn't eating a

POPSStupid Republican and Democrat arguments Obama reaching across the isle to discriminate. 7 Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children. 8 Being gay is disgusting. Which is why lesbian porn isn't a 3.5 billion dollar a year industry. 9 Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America. 10 Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children. (Obama is the proof for this one) 11 Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.

POPSTop 10 New Organisms of 2008 (last picture) With only 8,000 of an estimated 3 million bacterial species identified, new bugs aren't hard to find. But unlike Chryseobacterium greenlandensis, they don't usually date from the late Pleistocene. Unthawed from ice recovered two miles below the surface of a 120,000-year-old Greenland glacier, C. greenlandensis appears unchanged by its time in deep-freeze. Its discoverers aren't sure whether it shut down or just slowed down its metabolism.

POPSGlobal Warming a Huge Expense in 2008 Recent events have proved that companies and nations aren't made out of money and can run out. Still, let's keep pretending that GW isn't happening and it's all some nutty idea like alien abductions. Really, what's the worst that can happen? Besides, the economy's freakin' awesome and we can totally afford to pay ten of billions a year.
