POPSRebel Shoaib Akhtar has been awarded a PCB central contract After all his years of conflict, argument and struggle with the PCB over money, drugs and discipline, it seems that the rebel Shoaib Akhtar has been awarded a PCB central contract. The contract form the PCB is thought to be worth $3,000 per month in addition to match fees and represents a change in fortune for Akhtar, who has played very little cricket over the last couple of years

POPSFrance Does A Variation On 'Fiddler On The Roof' Excuse me if I am not impressed by the French credentials on how to control violence. Hemingway notes the French standard on violence: But my favorite bit from the article was this: "In Nantes, around 10 cars were torched although police in the western city said New Year's Eve had been "pretty calm.'" Burning a mere ten cars in your French town is "pretty calm"? Oy. All in all, I would say that France is being, how do you say in French...oh yes: 'Très chutzpadick'.

POPSNet-Zero Gas Tax Well-reasoned argument for raising gas tax by $1 while gas is cheap and reducing FICA taxes by $14 a week. Revenue neutral to Fed gov, saves the planet and we starve enemy oil producers of revenue.

POPSIsrael’s Refusal to Allow UN Human Rights Investigators to Enter Gaza In listening to the CNN interview the pack of lies by the war mongering heartless bullies were almost believable until asked about oversight, then it all fell apart. I guess when you become as arrogant and your accomplice in crime (Bush) you don't bother trying to lie well. Insulting to anyone with a functioning mind.

POPSNo Faith in Democracy Why don't we just let elected governments govern? The idea of co-opting radical movements by letting them take responsibility for mundane social services is very powerful.

POPSThe Economist: U.S. In Depression, Not Recession Where does that leave us today? America’s GDP may have fallen by an annualised 6% in the fourth quarter of 2008, but most economists dismiss the likelihood of a 1930s-style depression or a repeat of Japan in the 1990s, because policymakers are unlikely to repeat the mistakes of the past. In the Great Depression, the Fed let hundreds of banks fail and the money supply shrink by one-third, while the government tried to balance its budget by cutting spending and raising taxes. America’s monetary and fiscal easing this time has been more aggressive than Japan’s in the 1990s. However, these reassurances come from many of the same economists who said that a nationwide fall in American house prices was impossible and that financial innovation had made the financial system more resilient.

POPSHow Wall Street's Loss May be Labor's Gain From economic media critic Dean Baker, who's blog I really need to check more often. Baker goes on to explain how a loss of demand from Wall St. types could be made up. "Eventually weakness in the labor market will put more downward pressure on real wages," he writes. "However, if the loss of demand from stockholders is effectively replaced by demand from the government or foreign sector, then the vast majority of the country will be made better off by this plunge in stock prices." Yet another argument in favor of a second New Deal.

POPSDo you always believe other people's claim?
We often have to make decisions based on what other people state or claim. However, how do you know if their statement or claim is a solid and valid argument? For example, we all enjoy going out for dinner with family and friends. When you pick up and look at the restaurant's menu, you notice there is a significant automatic charge for service that will be included in your bill. You question this charge with the owner of the restaurant, who tells you the charge is due to the trend in which large parties often pay less in tips than small parties. Would you take as a fact what the owner claimed? Mathematics is a useful tool to prove or disprove someone's claim. The excerpts clipped to this post came from an interesting article from Plus Magazine web site (i.e. Issue 49), which explains how Statistics is used to make sense of all the information we receive from different sources. I encourage you to read the article and become aware how mathematics can help you make informed decisions.

POPSHealth Care ≠ Money IMO, this makes a valid argument for Universal Healthcare. It's time we stop using fiscal reasoning to account for life and death decisions.

POPSCousin Marriage OK by Science "Ultimately it's a political question about what you allow individuals to do, and what that says about the structure of society," said Spencer. With seven billion people on the face of the planet, one should think it would be doable to find a partner who is not a relative. Science or not, I still think inter-breeding among families is just plain yucky.

POPSSola scriptura minus the scriptura And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

POPSHuffington Post Stealing Others' Writing? For its part, the Huff Post is claiming that it only uses part of an outside publisher's articles and then links back to their site for the rest. While it is certainly true that the Huff Post has links to the original source, the argument has been made that the Huff Post folks use nearly the entire article, instead of mere headlines or short segments. This is what is raising the ire of the print media folks that have found their on-line articles poached in total on the Huff Post site.

POPSSurprisig? Not Really These experiments have a more serious overtone of torture, but it is still an old theory. Basic Psych 101 experiments done by Phillip Zimbardo in a Jail like experiment had the same results. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. I think people just love to hurt others to offset their own needs to want to hurt people they know, but could never get away with it. I'm willing to bet that if they had a cattle prod in one hand and their mother-in-Law next to them, as much as they might want to shock her, they won't. But if it was a stranger, they'd enjoy it. Remember 70% decided to go beyond the standard in the experiment (over 150 volts). That hurts!
