A Fallen American Soldier
cptenaud
by cptenaud  10-19-2008    8
continued; his father, Feroze Khan, told the Gannett News Service in a story printed shortly after his death. "He looked at it that he's American and he has a job to do." Powell framed the entire "Obama is a Muslim" debate in striking terms with his reference to this fallen American soldier. "Is there something wrong with being Muslim in America? No, that's not America," he said. "He was 14 years old at the time of 9/11, and he waited until he could go serve his country, and he gave his life," Mr. Powell said. "Now, we have got to stop polarizing ourselves in this way." The highly charged rhetoric used by McCain and Palin to tie Obama to terrorism and Islam is once again an affront to all Muslim Americans. We saw this type of fear and backlash just after 9/11. We see it also in the McCarthy-like invocations of Michele Bachmann. I challenge Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin to tell this grieving mother that her son is anti-American because of his faith.

Powell said he felt especially strongly about the because of a photo he saw in The New Yorker magazine of the mother of a Muslim soldier in Arlington Cemetery embracing her son's grave, which was marked with a Muslim crescent and star. The soldier, Kareem R. Khan of New Jersey, was 20 when he was killed in Iraq.

Wiccan Pentacle Added to Emblems Allowed on Headstones
k9riley99
by k9riley99  4-23-2007    6
The pentacle has been added to 38 symbols the VA already permits on gravestones. They include commonly recognized symbols for Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Judaism, as well as those for smaller religions such as Sufism Reoriented, Eckiankar and the Japanese faith Seicho-No-Ie. VA-issued headstones, markers and plaques can be used in any cemetery, whether it is a national one such as Arlington or a private burial ground like that on Circle Sanctuary's property. Wicca is a nature-based religion based on respect for the earth, nature and the cycle of the seasons. Variations of the pentacle not accepted by Wiccans have been used in horror movies as a sign of the devil.

Generation Chickenhawk: College Republicans
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  7-21-2007    6
Really need to check out the video at the Huffingtonpost.com website that this clip comes from. Typical chickenhawks. Asthma. Bad knees from playing catcher in high school. "Medical reasons." "It's not for me." These were some of the excuses College Republicans offered for why they could not fight them "over there." Like the current Republican leaders who skipped out on Vietnam, the GOP's next generation would rather cheerlead from the sidelines for the war in Iraq while other, less privileged young men and women fight and die.

A Strategy not for Victory, but for Escalation
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  5-29-2007    5
The "New" Strategy that Bush has vaunted so much seems more and more to be a sinister ploy to avoid accountability. Militarily, this strategy is not feasible. While it might work in traditional warfare against an entrenched military, in the fluid dynamics of asymmetrical warfare, we are simply diving into the whirlpool. As our enemy continues to disappear into the surrounding chaos, we will become enveloped in an increasingly intractable fight to defend indefensible battle lines. I believe this is a strategy not to win the war, but simply to draw us into it so deeply that nobody can force Bush to end the war, and he can leave that as a problem for his anticipated Democratic successor.

The Things Their Families Carried

“Oftentimes you would see a family go up to the grave and they would just launch themselves onto the tombstone and start crying,” Mr. Alpert said. “Our instinct as reporters was ‘We have to film that.’ And we didn’t. We would stand there, and then we would go over without the cameras running, and we would talk to people. And we would explain who we were, why we were there, and ask if it would be possible for them to share with us.”

They consider themselves the new chosen—congressmen, generals, and foreign dictators who meet in confidential cells, to pray and plan for a "leadership led by God," to be won not by force but through "quiet diplomacy." Their base is a leafy estate overlooking the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia, and Jeff Sharlet is the only journalist to have reported from inside its walls.

ARLINGTON, VA — Today, McCain-Palin 2008 held a press conference call with Miguel D. Lausell, Senior Political Advisor to Hillary Clinton, and Clinton Delegate-at-Large Luchy Secaira. Both Lausell and Secaira endorsed John McCain for president. I don’t see anything new about put-down politics. And once again, I want to reiterate that the Hispanic community has nothing to fear because they know John McCain. uppitywoman08.wordpress.com

Ok, I don't know where to start here... For one thing this bastard deserves to be castrated. However, what the fuck was an 11 year old girl doing walking home at 1 AM??? The parents shouldbe charged as accomplices in the crime IMO. It was thier incompitence as parents that let this happen. It makes me want to scream. Its easy enough for these creeps as it is.. you serve your 11 year old on a silver platter? you deserve to be shot. That's just my opinion though.

WiFi Turns Internet Into Hideout For Criminals
Sorgalim

These days, the Internet is as indispensable to an officer's arsenal as his gun and handcuffs. Indeed, a growing number of officers are being assigned to patrol cyberspace..."Technology just makes the park no longer the only place where the pervert goes," West said. The problem is going to get worse, authorities said. Every day, more homes, businesses and entire jurisdictions are outfitted with wireless networks, creating an almost seamless patchwork of available Internet connections to anyone with a laptop and the desire to get online.
