We Arm the World
papananook
by papananook  1-5-2009
e more we help one side, the more that regime’s opponents are driven to seek arms from another supplier, leading to an inevitable spiral of arms buying, provocation and conflict,” Klare says. According to Stohl, “The Bush administration has demonstrated a willingness to provide weapons and military training to weak and failing states and countries that have been repeatedly criticized by the U.S. State Department for human rights violations, lack of democracy and even support of terrorism.”

Why I Am a Socialist
brightlight4
by brightlight4  12-31-2008    36
The corporation is designed to make money without regard to human life, the social good or impact on the environment. Corporate laws impose a legal duty on corporate executives to make as much money as possible for shareholders, although many have moved on to fleece shareholders as well. In the 2003 documentary film “The Corporation” the management guru Peter Drucker says: “If you find an executive who wants to take on social responsibilities, fire him. Fast.”

Dispute over US- Pakistani F-16 deal
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  9-19-2008
But the move has raised the ire of some representatives in Congress. They are blocking the payment because they say the money was supposed to go towards counterterror programs. "We are concerned that the administration’s proposal to use military assistance to pay for the F-16 upgrades will divert funds from more effective counterterrorism tools like helicopters, TOW missiles, and night-vision goggles," said Howard Berman and Nita Lowey, heads of two key committees in the House of Representatives, in a July statement.

Chavez Meets Russia's Medvedev For Trade Talks
merrie
by merrie  7-22-2008    3
"We expect the signing of a range of contracts" in the arms sector, a member of the Venezuelan delegation was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying. He added that purchases could include Russian tanks and submarines. Chavez was also due to meet Sergei Chemezov, who oversees Russian arms export monopoly Rosoboronexport, a Kremin source said Tuesday. Rosoboronexport spokesman Vyacheslav Davidenko declined to comment about specific weapons deals, but he told AFP the two sides had drafted a document providing a "legal basis" for future arms deliveries. The Kommersant daily said Tuesday that a complicating factor in talks could be Venezuela's relationship with its neighbour Colombia, which accuses Chavez of aiding the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a rebel group. If Russian weapons surface in the conflict zone, Moscow would be threatened not only with a significant worsening of relations with Bogota, but with Washington too,"

It seems more and more apparent that a group of destruction workers should be dispatched to the STATUE OF LIBERTY, with her declaration: "...those yearning to breathe free." Since it is an obvious lie (but then this country seems to be getting away with lies at every port) we should not promise what we cannot deliver. That was another time, another life, another AMERICA.

Blair interferred in Courts: Fraud Probe
righthand
by righthand  2-14-2008
"The SFO inquiry arose out of BAE's £43billion Al-Yamamah arms deal with Saudi Arabia in 1985, which provided Tornado and Hawk jets plus other military equipment in 1985. In December 2006 the then Attorney General, Lord Goldsmith, announced the probe was to be discontinued, citing national security considerations. The Attorney General said that would have "seriously negative consequences" for UK national security and the "highest priority foreign policy objectives in the Middle East". But Ms Rose argued the real reason for dropping the investigation "was not national security but the commercial situation" and the decision violated the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention. The decision was also based on "tainted advice" and was unlawful because the Director had permitted threats, or blackmail, to influence his decision. " ,,,DailyMail

JPost: Britain BLOCKS Arms Deals with ISRAEL
righthand
by righthand  8-19-2007    1
The UK committee said "we further recommend that the government explain how it assesses whether there is a clear risk‚ that a proposed export to Israel might be used for internal repression." It asked that "the government explain its policy on licensing exports to Israel, Jordan or other countries in the Middle East and that it explain whether it has adjusted its policy since 1997 as events in the Occupied Territories and Middle East have unfolded." Statistics published by the committee showed that arms exports to Israel totaled 14.5 million pounds last year (about $29 million), compared to GBP 22.5 million in 2005. Between 1997 and 2006 Britain granted Israel 1561 Standard Individual Export Licenses (SIELs) valued at GBP 113 million. During the same period it authorized 626 SIELs valued at GBP 136.5 million for shipment to Jordan.

Who's Arming Israel?
invictus
by invictus  8-1-2006    3
During the Bush administration, from 2001 to 2005, Israel received $10.5 billion in Foreign Military Financing -- the Pentagon's biggest military aid program -- and $6.3 billion in U.S. arms deliveries. The aid figure is larger than the arms transfer figure because it includes financing for major arms agreements for which the equipment has yet to be fully delivered. The most prominent of these deals is a $4.5 billion sale of 102 Lockheed Martin F-16s to Israel.
