Bali Hindus Challenge Indonesian Porn Legislation
Jorjor
by Jorjor  9-20-2008
It's time for a clip that has nothing to do with US politics: Usually when we hear about religious minorities making a fuss about anti-porn laws, it's because they're not restrictive enough. But Bali's 93% majority Hindus fear that the new, draconian laws being contemplated by the rest of Indonesia's Muslim majority will trample on local customs such as erotic temple statuary and threaten the tourist trade - skimpy is a word that barely describes the swimwear on Bali's beaches (pun intended) Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika said, "Many people in Papua still live naked or half-naked. Are we going to arrest them all?" Bali is home to Legian beach, the only publicly acknowledged clothing-optional beach in Indonesia.

Will Supreme Court Uphold Right to Bear Arms?
blueridge
by blueridge  11-11-2007
The case in particular revolves around a Washington DC (unconstitutional) ordinance that bans handguns, or requires their disassembly. But upholding what a federal judge has ruled, that such an ordinance is unconstitutional, the principle of course (though plain to all) has ramifications on all gun measures that states and the federal government have (unconstitutionally) passed--i.e. mandatory registration, IDs, concealed carry, transportation between states, etc. The current gun laws would have been immediately decried by the founders which included this in the Bill of Rights. "As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people duly before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the next article in their right to keep and bear their private arms." Tenche Cox, 1789 on the 2nd Amendment

"To turn your body you must apply a torque, or twisting force, to it, and once you are in the air you have nothing to apply a torque with. If, on the other hand, you begin twisting from the ground up, clasping your legs together at the apex of your leap while raising your arms above your head, you will do a rapid 180-degree turn, which is the object of the exercise. “ :-)

Tolerance vs. Intolerance
laceym
by laceym  3-31-2007
Doctor 1: "I believe that the problem is focused on your gall bladder. We are going to have to remove it." Doctor 2: "No! The evidence clearly shows that this condition is caused by a bacteria. We should start the patient on antibiotics" Doctor 1: "I do not see why you militant bacterialists simply refuse to tolerate the opinions of us defective organists. We have as much of a right to our opinion as you do. We have a sick patient here. We should learn to tolerate each other's beliefs and work together." I don't know about you, but as soon as I heard Doctor 1 make that statement, I'm firing him as my doctor. Clearly, he does not understand what medicine is about and that treating a patient involves finding the best treatment based on the available evidence.

House passes bill (HR 4279) that will let the RIAA take away your home for downloading music
sahara
by sahara  5-21-2008
If this bill is passed in its present form by the Senate and signed, that means there's no more pro forma RIAA lawsuit payoffs, because if you wind up settling with the RIAA, you could still lose all your stuff in addition to any fee you paid them. The more the law is constructed to sweep in folks who are absolutely observant of it, the more we need broader protections. The voting scorecard, http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll300.xml Only 11 Noes, to include Ron Paul. "It means they may take your home away if your KID is stealing music over the internet without even your knowledge. Cause it happened on property you had direct control over though you are clueless." Read the rest at the source, the comments are pretty good as well.

You Know You're Getting Old When...

You wear black socks with sandals. You know what the word equity means. You can't remember the last time you laid on the floor to watch television. Your ears are hairier than your head. You talk about "good grass" and you're referring to someone's lawn. You get into a heated argument about pension plans. You got cable for the weather channel. You can go bowling without drinking.
