The first evidence for a belief in the region for the soul - found in Turkey
einbar
by einbar  11-29-2008    8
What is it with humans and the idea of a soul? "It might also be an evolutionary strategy that takes us away from the anxieties of self-consciousness. Once fully modern humans knew they could die, it probably made sense to pretend that no one really died but that some part of us lived on into the cosmos. Given the vagaries of ancient life, it probably also made sense to invent souls that had the power to haunt and cause harm to explain all the bad stuff in life".

In defence of plastic
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-18-2008    7
"New plastics that change from liquid to solid on impact are finding applications in protective clothing and plastic products are being developed using the principles of nature - an area of research called biomimetics. So plastic can be valuable and can be used for functions where it needs to last for a considerable length of time. Concepts of green design should now be applied to all new plastics products so that disposable items, such as plastic packaging and throwaway consumer items, biodegrade and do not fill landfill sites or litter the landscape or seas"

Art on Wheels: The Magnificent Truck Art of Pakistan
gingembre
by gingembre  11-22-2008    3
Beautiful, ornate artwork moving about the roads of Pakistan. "Jamal Elias breaks down the motifs for truck art into the following 5 categories: 1. Idealized elements of personal and communal life. 2. Elements of political and national life. 3. Talismans, trinkets, and clothing. 4. Talismans or religious symbols. 5. Obvious religious symbols and images." "Unlike vanity plates and ‘pimp-my-ride’ style modifications, Pakistani truck art is about cultural history and tradition, storytelling, passion, and sometimes playful one-upsmanship.'

When money is no object... -$20,000 simply on items classified as "event-donor gifts." -$9,000 at a jewelry and political paraphernalia shop in Washington D.C. -$6,000 to an art restoration company in Kensington, Maryland -$4,249.07 At Lands End -$955 On Golf Carts ...is this a sampling of McCain's idea of "fiscal responsibility" ? Seriously. This is how they are spending other people's money now, what does it tell you?

A scarf made to look like bacon! What a great idea!
enbar
by enbar  2-19-2008    3
Made of "21.5 micron merino wool" for that luxurious, bacon-on-skin feeling. Unfortunately it's sold out. The creator's comments: "It looks like a real slice of bacon, with all the striations of fat and meat.... Seriously, do a search on 'bacon scarf' and look at the other bacon scarves out there. They use a paltry two colors, and they don’t look as realistic as this!" Wow... The stuff you find on Twitter...

Art/Pop Nerds of the World Unite: the Music of Stephin Merritt
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  1-15-2008    1
Okay, it may make me a culture snob or a geek, but I've got to admit, I wear brown, and I loved "69 Love Songs." And from the looks of this photo, Stephin Merritt has stolen my appartment. Still, great to see him getting some press. I recommend his music to everybody. On a deeper, more disturbing level, the fact that he wears the same clothes as I do, has the same apartment as I do, and seems to listen to the same music as I do makes me suddenly insecure about the uniqueness of my identity! I guess I'm different, just like everyone else. :P

Who Rules America? And Why Do They Hide?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely. Too many politicians and so called religious leaders are wearing a MASK of piety. Beware wolves in sheeps clothing... there are forces they SERVE that is not nation or God. And man cannot have two masters.

Amazing, they buy a statue of Jesus (As described by the sculpture) place it in front of a Christian gift shop. And then say it's OK, because it isn't Jesus. Are they that stupid?

Change in the Conservative Personality Equals Change in the Offender with a Resultant Reduction in Recidivism by Michael D. Parsons and Jennifer G. Parsons Abstract Offenders have many of the characteristics of the conservative personality as defined by Adorno, Collins, Wilson, and Boshier. The characteristics of the conservative personality limit change necessary for rehabilitation. Until that personality is modified, it is very difficult to reduce recidivism. Modification of the conservative personality through education and environment can lead to change in the offender’s behavior. Is it possible to reduce violence by the criminal offender during incarceration? This paper presents the basis for a model which deals with certain offenders through an educational effort to modify some of their negative characteristics which include violence. The model in this paper is based on the concept of a conservative/authoritarian personality as it is found in offenders. The concept of t
