1944 Winter In Belgium: Rare Newsreel Video
merrie
by merrie  12-17-2008    1
A term of art from the artillery. Harassment and Interdiction Fires. Back in the day, when you could just kill people and break things without a note from a lawyer, they were pre-planned, but to the enemy, random, fires at known gathering points, road junctions, Main Supply Routes, assembly areas, etc - to keep the bad guy nervous that the world around him might start exploding at any minute. Not really relevant to today's operating environment, right? But, it is. The UAVs we fly over Afghanistan and Pakistan looking for targets of opportunity are a form of H&I fires, if you really want to parse it finely. We just have better sensors and fire control now. Now I have to call them UAS's, because someone got a Legion of Merit for the name change.Anyway, I call the post H&I Fires because it's random things posted by me and people I've given posting privileges to that particular topic. Another term of art that might be appropriate is Free Fire Zone. H/T Argghhh!

Cool Globes Public Art Exhibit: Hot Ideas For a Cooler Planet
urbanlife
by urbanlife  5-8-2008    1
"Cool Globes" is public art with a purpose – to increase awareness about and motivate people to implement simple solutions in their day-to-day lives to help combat global warming. I am showing you the 2007 Globes from Chicago: To remind you that from April 17 to September 1, 2008, a selection of globes will once again be on display in Chicago, Washington, DC and San Francisco. Cool Globes debuted in Chicago on June 1, 2007 with over 100 sculpted globes. Cool Globes was launched in Chicago because of the City's leadership and dedication to promoting environmentally sound policies. For the 2007 globes, there was a charity auction of select large and mini-globes from the Cool Globes exhibit. The auction raised $500,000 to fund the expansion of environmental education programs.

The Pinup Side of Biker Art
Tali99
by Tali99  4-9-2008    4
I managed to translate the lyrics to this silly song, with Google and a friend that claims to know something. Let me know if you know better Laugh : I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson Nobody On a Harley Davidson I squeeze the clutch And leave the ground I'll go to heaven, But in a train to hell. I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson Nobody On a Harley Davidson And if I die tomorrow It was my destiny I wish much less for life Than my terrible engine's I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson When I feel the way The juddering of my machine, I climbed desires In my guts I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I don't need anybody On a Harley Davidson I go to more than one hundred, And I'm filled with fire and blood, Let me die The wind in my hair Let me die The wind in my hair And that would explain the crazy hair tossing...

madame travels
by madame travels  5-7-2008
Marking 2008 as the city's year as European Capital of Culture, Tate Liverpool is opening Britain's first comprehensive exhibition of the work of Gustav Klimt. Featuring many of his typically opulent portraits, the exhibition highlights Klimt's position as the founder and leader of the Viennese Sezession, a progressive group of artists and artisans. Klimt opens on May 30. The quote in the final image, Nuda Veritas is from Schiller. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schiller

Subjective Reality and Autobiographical Fiction
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  3-8-2008
People are still getting worked up over this? Dare I call them gullible? I mean, normally when I read an autobiography where the author claims to have been raised by a pack of wolves I chuckle to myslef and presume that some obscure sense of humor is at work. I mean, seriously, how was ANYONE fooled into thinking this story was real? Apparently it's gonna be an awkward Rosh Ha-Shanah at the Defonseca household, that is, of course, if they don't just skip it. ;) Still, back in the 60s and 70s the work of Hunter Thompson was considered JOURNALISM. Is it safe to say that the public has moved towards a naive objectivism, presuming that all that is printed as fact must be true, and that we have lost touch with the subjective nature of human experience? I hope we get this spasm under control in time to save the beautiful subjective art of Literature!
