Anatomy of a false memory
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  11-14-2008
A new study now reconciles these conflicting data, by showing that the different regions of the brain previously implicated are involved in different kinds of memory errors. It also pinpoints a specific region as being involved in false memories, and could help researchers better understand how the brain controls memory.

Red wine's resveratrol may help battle obesity
Mohir
by Mohir  6-16-2008
In the cell-based study, they found that resveratrol inhibited the pre-fat cells from increasing and prevented them from converting into mature fat cells. Also, resveratrol hindered fat storage. Most interesting, according to Fischer-Posovszky, was that resveratrol reduced production of certain cytokines (interleukins 6 and 8), substances that may be linked to the development of obesity-related disorders, such as diabetes and clogged coronary arteries. Also, resveratrol stimulated formation of a protein known to decrease the risk of heart attack. Obesity decreases this substance, called adiponectin.

Divided - Jerusalem ?!?
syncopath
by syncopath  10-23-2007    2
"The paving of major transportation arteries, and recently also a rail line, created a network to serve a unified city. Even public institutions and government offices were set up in strategic locations in the eastern part of the city in order to prevent a possible division. Alongside this, the acquisition of lands and properties from Arabs, by Jewish individuals and associations, continues constantly with the aim of establishing additional facts on the ground." the report's authors mapped the neighborhoods and villages in East Jerusalem from north to south and assessed the chances of separating them. The mapping indicates that it is possible, with difficulties, to cut off from Jerusalem neighborhoods where only a third of the 240,000 Arab residents currently reside. From an economic and employment perspective, the report stipulates that separating the "neighborhoods on the edge," adjacent to the PA areas, will have a limited affect on Jerusalem's economy. However, the loss of th

Why the Young Men Are So Ugly
haraya
by haraya  12-30-2007    5
continued... it is only because of the tractors, the tractors in their blood, revving their engines, chewing up the turf inside their arteries and veins It is the testosterone tractor constantly climbing the mudhill of the world and dragging the young man behind it by a chain around his leg. In the stink and the noise, in the clouds of filthy exhaust is where they live. It is the tractors that make them what they are. While they make being a man look like a disease. I wish I didn't have to cut the poem. Anyway, some women can be so ugly too.

Why more troops won't help Afghanistan
masbury

The nature of the conflict has changed from regional to a nation-wide warlord/Taliban alliance fueled by a separate and huge opium-poppy economy. This is what the Soviets failed to defeat, despite massive infusions of blood and capital.
