POPS" I am Joe Six-Pack. I am not who they think that they are talking to. Are you?" More: Joe is the guy I worked with who served in Vietnam, worked construction, had four kids, thought Portland micro-brews were for hippies and weirdos -- and told me one day about having to change churches, because "our pastor spends all his time talking about how bad the gays are, and I go to church for God, and I really don't think God cares who you sleep with or who you marry." Oh, and he went back to school at 45 to get a degree in architecture, so I guess he won't be Joe Six-Pack soon. His income will put him into that Better Class of People y'all think you're part of. Joe is a writer or an actor or an artist who waits tables, pumps gas, shelves books, does landscaping, delivers pizza, scrubs toilets, and otherwise works his or her ass off all day or night to pay the mortgage so they can continue to write or act or make art.

POPSThe paints of Colour-blind artist. Colour-blind artist learns to paint by hearing A COLOUR-BLIND artist who could only recognise black and white shades has learnt how to paint with a full palette by “hearing” the hues he cannot see. Neil Harbisson, 25, has been fitted with a device called an Eyeborg, which converts 360 colours into different sounds. As an art student at Dartington College of Arts in Devon, he painted only in black and white because that is all he saw. But three years ago he met Adam Montandon, a cybernetics expert who came to give a lecture at the college. After the talk, Montandon was told of Harbisson’s condition and he took up the challenge of solving the problem, enabling Harbisson to paint in colour. The artist suffers from achromatopsia – or complete congenital colour blindness.

POPSOn the Threshold of Eternity… It was, always have been in human nature... Depression. Terrible destructive feelings of hopelessness, darkness even in bright day. In the final count it is looseness, inability to manage your own life, copying with advancing troubles. Look at his haircut, beard, high hills... And he had his paintings. Instead of Internet.

POPS2006 International Snow Sculpture Championships The site has many more pictures from previous years, plus a video (which I couldn't clip) showing how they make the blocks for the sculptors. I don't which is more difficult, snow carving or sand carving. But they can both look magnificent!

POPSYankee Stadium "lego-ized" Lego artist Sean Kenney and a Manhattan grade schooler spent three years building a 60" x 66" x 14" replica (1:150 scale) using 45,700 bricks. As you can see, the result of their efforts so far is impressive. When completed, the stadium will be populated with tons of miniature spectators and vendors.

POPSIs McCain's skin cancer under the left eye back? Assuming McCain actually shows up to the debate Friday night, Jim Lehrer needs to ask him to release his medical records. If a 72-year-old cancer patient with 4 previous bouts of melanoma (and over 1,000 pages of medical records over the last 8 years alone) wants to be elected president, I think it's of national security interest to know how likely he is to survive all four years of his term.
