Biotech Bad News: What We Said
Forbes Business
by Forbes Business  7-20-2007
From June 5: "GPC Biotech (nasdaq: GPCB - news - people ) This company's prostate cancer drug Satraplatin is one of the hotter prospects in biotech now. It is up for approval at the FDA, and the agency will convene a panel of advisers to discuss the drug's risks and benefits July 24. The drug, being co-developed with Pharmion, has a shot at approval. In a phase III trial presented at ASCO, it slowed the rate of disease progression in patients who had failed chemotherapy, compared with doses of the anti-inflammation drug Prednisone. At the presentation, Ian Tannock from Princess Margaret Hospital in Ontario, said that Satraplatin is better than placebo. But although no chemotherapy is approved for treating patients this sick, patients tend to get it anyway. Tannock said he thought it was impossible to tell if Satraplatin was better than other regimens, which could make it difficult for doctors to decide how to use the drug. " -- Matt Herper
