New You By 2018

Therapeutic: Cloning for tissue replacement is already happening, as stem cells have successfully grown new heart tissues in patients. Researchers believe replacing muscle, bone, skin; even neurons, teeth, eyes, and other organs could be in beginning stages by 2018. Augmentation: Procedures expected to be in place by as early as 2015 include improved memory recall, simultaneous language translation, long range and microscopic vision on demand, wide spectrum hearing, distinctive voice projection, and stronger muscles. And by mid-to-late-2020s, “nanobots” monitoring each of our cells could keep us ageless and forever healthy. Designed Evolution: These could include memory, intelligence, speed, agility, and other behavioral and physical attributes. Eliminating undesired genes that might pre-dispose a child to cancer, heart disease or alcoholism could be possible by about 2015.

The power and the glory
wildcat
by wildcat  6-21-2008    3
The market for energy is huge. At present, the world’s population consumes about 15 terawatts of power. (A terawatt is 1,000 gigawatts, and a gigawatt is the capacity of the largest sort of coal-fired power station.) That translates into a business worth $6 trillion a year—about a tenth of the world’s economic output—according to John Doerr, a venture capitalist who is heavily involved in the industry. And by 2050, power consumption is likely to have risen to 30 terawatts.

Stem cells are needed
balthazarus
by balthazarus  8-1-2008
The conflict centers on an effort to create stem cells from embryos that are exact clones of adults. The hope is to one day use the cells to generate transplant tissues or even whole body parts to treat incurable diseases. Last month, the California agency doled out $23 million in research grants but turned down all applications seeking funding for the technique, known as therapeutic cloning." I find it very disturbing; why does the US try to hold off the future that may take humanity one step forward.

Nano RNA Delivery Novel delivery agents could mean a more targeted way to turn off disease genes.
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  5-4-2008
The MIT researchers, however, developed a way to make more than a thousand different delivery agents in parallel using a simple, one-step chemical process. And that allowed the team to quickly discover effective delivery molecules, including several that surprised the researchers. "We wouldn't have necessarily sat down and said, this is a structure that's going to work," says Daniel Anderson, a research associate at the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT. "It was only by making and testing over a thousand that we were able to get to that place."

Missouri OKs Stem Cell Research
kmcolo
by kmcolo  11-9-2006    1
Missouri voters have narrowly approved a measure sanctioning embryonic stem cell research in the state. The amendment to the state constitution received 51% of yesterday's vote after supporters waged a $30 million advertising campaign that included celebrities such as Michael J. Fox. Elsewhere, three governors who had backed stem cell research in their states won re-election, while one of the biggest congressional opponents of their use--U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA)--was trounced.

Scientists find way to get stem cells w/o killing embryos

"But hardline critics of embryo research – such as the US Conference of Catholic Bishops – are unlikely to accept the manipulation even of a single embryonic cell, which they say could theoretically become a human being." I do not see how anyone can put the life of an embryo above the lives of those who suffer from Parkinson's disease.
