62% of Egyptian men regularly harass women
Smoke TNT
by Smoke TNT  7-27-2008    1
The sexual harassment committed by Egyptian men included touching without permission, staring, making insulting sexual comments and exposing their genitals to women. Fifty-three percent of the male respondents said women were to blame for sexual harassment because they enjoyed it and because they dressed in revealing clothing. Most women who were harassed did not file a complaint with the police and most incidents took place in the street, public transportation or tourist sites.

The Twelve Apostles and Bloody Sunday (original)
righthand
by righthand  7-18-2008    3
Like America, we had out War of Independence followed by a bloody Civil War on the issue of independence. This was also in common with many other states that gained independence. We didn't gain full independence until 1948 when we took it without a shot being fired. We did lose 6 of our 9 counties of Ulster, our northern providence. Hopefully some day our "four green fields" will be reunited peacefully. By Bush&Co's definition all our leaders would have been terrorists like Nelson Mandela , just like your own revered insurrectionists/freedom fighters/terrorists/founding fathers. Our longest serving PM and president de Valera would have been executed along with the 1916 Rising leaders only he was born in America.

NSA Secret Files Revealed after 40 years
righthand
by righthand  6-15-2008    4
The National Security Agency Central Security Service has after 40 years revealed its Secret Files. June 6th was the 40th anniversary of the murder of 34 innocent servicemen and 173 casualties , some very serious. The miracle was that the ship didn't sink with all hands as the lifeboats had been deliberately destroyed when launched. WW3 might well have started as US nuclear armed aircraft were intending bombing Cairo as revenge for the sinking of USS Liberty by the Egyptians as planned by the real perpetrator, Israel. Fortunately the Liberty got off a signal in time.

Islam's Biggest Enemy Is The Muslims Themselves
merrie
by merrie  7-5-2008    2
U.N. Human Rights Council, the Saudi Shura Council raised objections, since reviling other religions is one of Islam's central precepts. "The ones who harm the Prophet are those who believe that woman is lewd, and that she detracts from the purity of prayer just like a dog or a donkey...and those who believe that a woman lacks intelligence. "The ones who harm the Prophet are the rulers of Arab states who have made their countries the last bastions of tyranny and dictatorship in the world, and who demand submission to religious texts to justify their crimes. "The ones who harm the Prophet do not live in the West - they are among us, the Muslims. It is the Muslims who have fashioned an Islamic model that is inherently terrorist, hypocritical, life-negating, and sustained by the murder of others in the name of jihad and by attacks on freedom of opinion under the pretext of defending Islamic national principles. This is what we - and no one else - have produced."

This Day In Israel, 1967 The Six-Day War Began
merrie
by merrie  6-6-2008    1
Seven months later, at a dinner at the LBJ Ranch in Texas, President Lyndon B. Johnson toasted Israeli Prime Minister Eshkol, saying: "That is our intention in the Middle East and throughout our world. To pursue peace. To find peace. To keep peace forever among men. If we are wise, if we are fortunate, if we work together-perhaps our Nation and all nations may know the joys of that promise God once made about the children of Israel: 'I will make a covenant of peace with them...it shall be an everlasting covenant.'"

Smoke a Pack a Day... or move to Cairo
apple white
by apple white  10-23-2007    5
This comes as no surprise to me. The entire time I was in Cairo I coughed, hacked and eye watered my way through each day. I asked my chain smoking friend why he bothered to smoke when he could just breathe the air. Worst pollution I personally have ever had to live through. Luckily enough I was able to escape by heading home, unlike most everyone else stuck there.

Catholic-Shiite Dialogue - Reasonable Understanding
Johanna_G
by Johanna_G  5-27-2008
Against the background of these existing contacts between the Vatican and Muslim authorities, one can look forward with anticipation to the first meeting of the Catholic-Muslim Forum, scheduled for early November. The forum was founded following a meeting in the Vatican in March this year, which itself was the result of a letter written in October 2007 by 138 Muslim scholars from 43 countries to the pope and other representatives of the Christian churches. The topic of the forthcoming meeting is to be "Love of God and neighbour." The Vatican-Shiite dialogue is also set to continue: another colloquium is planned for two years time in Tehran. Mideast Governments Tired of Bush Rhetoric As Well!
sahara
by sahara  5-28-2008    2
Israeli commentators said the Egyptian mediation amounted to indirect negotiations between the Israeli government and Hamas, a group with which the United States refuses to have dealings. The Palestinian resistance organisation, which controls inside Gaza Strip (although it is still under Israeli occupation), was offering Israel a long-term truce which could make it easier for the rival Palestinian group Fatah to reach an agreement with Israel -- a goal which the United States says it is promoting. In his Sharm el-Sheikh speech, Bush also attacked the Lebanese group Hezbollah, calling it "terrorists funded by Iran" and "the enemy of a free Lebanon" Three days later in the Gulf state of Qatar, Hezbollah and other Lebanese groups reached an agreement ending the political crisis that had paralysed Lebanon for months.

An Al Qaeda Mastermind Questions Terrorism Lawrence Wright
merrie
by merrie  5-28-2008
“Do they now have fax machines in Egyptian jail cells?” he asked. “I wonder if they’re connected to the same line as the electric-shock machines.” This sarcastic dismissal was perhaps intended to dampen anxiety about Fadl’s manifesto—which was to be published serially, in newspapers in Egypt and Kuwait—among Al Qaeda insiders. Fadl’s previous work, after all, had laid the intellectual foundation for Al Qaeda’s murderous acts. On a recent trip to Cairo, I met with Gamal Sultan, an Islamist writer and a publisher there. He said of Fadl, “Nobody can challenge the legitimacy of this person. His writings could have far-reaching effects not only in Egypt but on leaders outside it.” Usama Ayub, a former member of Egypt’s Islamist community, who is now the director of the Islamic Center in Münster, Germany, told me, “A lot of people base their work on Fadl’s writings, so he’s very important. When Dr. Fadl speaks, everyone should listen.” Lawrence Wright, "The Looming Tower"
