POPSPope Feared Bush Is The Anti-Christ The Pope, who grew up facing the evils of Hitler and Stalin, knows evil when he sees it. An old article from 2003, but very thought-provoking! Now, I'm no Catholic, but if Pope John Paul ll (rest in peace) had such concerns about the "goodness" of Mr George W. Bush, then I sit up and listen. Are there any Catholics out there who know what the Church's or the current Pope's stand on this issue is now?

POPSPope correcting Jesus I don't care what the pope says, I much prefer Jesus Christ's definition of a church, which I included in my cartoon today, says Bob Englehart, who created this cartoon, in his blog .

POPSJokes just jokes An elderly man walks into a confessional. The following conversation ensues: Man: "I am 92 years old, have a wonderful wife of 70 years, many children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Yesterday, I picked up two college girls, hitchhiking. We went to a motel, where I had sex with each of them three times." Priest: "Are you sorry for your sins?" Man: "What sins?" Priest: "What kind of a Catholic are you?" Man: "I'm Jewish." Priest: "Why are you telling me all this?" Man: "I'm 92 years old ... I'm telling everybody."

POPSThe Mind-Altering Role of Incense in Religion Under the influence of a good snoot full of incense, mice in scary situations, such as being put in a swimming pool, remain calm, anxiety-free. At the alter, too, people feel the same sense of peace that comes from either the comforting words of the clergy, or from the intoxicating, brain altering, smell of incense. In an age of endless anxiety, no wonder religion works; it is both cultural and biological. Karl Marx claimed that organized religion was the "opiate of the people," meaning it dulls us into complacency, but that might not be such a bad thing.

POPSWhen Human Rights Extend to Nonhumans The 300 apes in Spanish zoos would not be freed, but better conditions would be mandated. Meanwhile, even in democracies, the law accords diminished rights to many humans: children, prisoners, the insane, the senile. Teenagers may not vote, philosophers who slip into dementia may be lashed to their beds, courts can order surgery or force-feeding. Spain’s Catholic bishops attacked the vote as undermining a divine will that placed humans above animals. One said such thinking led to abortion, euthanasia and ethnic cleansing.

POPSVery Sobering Images of the World Today Do not look at these if you are upset real easily, because they are awful, but they are real of what's going on round the world today. Still absolutely shocking though, it should't be going on anymore! Their is enough money in the world to stop this!

POPSThe blog post that wouldn't die I want to talk about atheists and anger. This has been a hard piece to write, and it may be a hard one to read. I'm not going to be as polite and good-tempered as I usually am in this blog; this piece is about anger, and for once I'm going to fucking well let myself be angry. But I think it's important. One of the most common criticisms lobbed at the newly-vocal atheist community is, "Why do you have to be so angry?" So I want to talk about: 1. Why atheists are angry; 2. Why our anger is valid, valuable, and necessary; And 3. Why it's completely fucked-up to try to take our anger away from us. So let's start with why we're angry. Or rather -- because this is my blog and I don't presume to speak for all atheists -- why I'm angry.<< http://gretachristina.typepad.com/

POPS1 in 3 Female Recruits RAPED by fellow Soldiers in "this man's army"
There is a deeper problem of widespread abuse and a system that protects the criminals. Unfortunately, the abuse in the recruitment system is prescient of military service, where a third of women who serve will be raped by fellow soldiers. It's high time that girls courted by military recruiters are kept out of harm's way here at home. Compare this with highly publicized abuse cases involving Catholic priests. Recruiters given administrative punishment do not. Ironically, priests aren't fixtures in most public schools but military recruiters are. Recruiters have unprecedented access to girls thanks to the No Child Left Behind Act which demands that public schools turn over student contact data to military recruiters so they can "work their market." The majority of school districts in the country have relaxed rules that allow recruiters to come and go at will. So more young people have personal and sustained contact with recruiters. by Former Army Specialist Aimee Allison

POPSWho Is The Real Patriot? I may not agree with his religion or some of his views, but I'd rather be in his fox-hole than Dick Cheney's or George Bush's.

POPSThe QuiverFull movement: having babies -- lots of babies -- for God Newsweek on the "QuiverFull" movement ("Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them." Psalm 127.4f.), which campaigns against birth control, espouses a relatively fundamentalist version of evangelical Christianity, and advocates having at least six children per family.

POPSFavourite Bible verses I grew up with the notion that you had to be "good" to get to heaven. The bible teaches us that no matter how "bad" you have been, you are still able to get to heaven simply by trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Some denominations would have you believe that you also have to do good works (go to church every Sunday, give money, etc.) to be saved. The scriptures quoted above clearly show these "works" doctrines to be false.

POPSJFK On Church-State Separation - No Spin, No Doubt "Finally, I believe in an America where religious intolerance will someday end, where all men and all churches are treated as equals, where every man has the same right to attend or not to attend the church of his choice, where there is no Catholic vote, no anti-Catholic vote, no bloc voting of any kind, and where Catholics, Protestants, and Jews, at both the lay and the pastoral levels, will refrain from those attitudes of disdain and division which have so often marred their works in the past, and promote instead the American ideal of brotherhood." POPSOldest Iraq Casualty: Americas SHAME After years of being away from hosting that daily, national discussion, Donahue returned to TV in 2002 as the host of a nightly debate-style program on MSNBC. For many people, the show was a much-needed breath of fresh air on the cable networks, increasingly dominated by right-wing pundits and media personalities. Antiwar voices long kept off these cable news channels were suddenly given a seat in the forbidden studios to take part in a national debate about the so-called war on terror. Donahue was on in the same time slot as Fox’s Bill O"Reilly. But the show didn’t last long. In fact, it didn’t even last a year, even though it was MSNBC"s top-rated program. When Donahue was fired, the network moved to hire a string of right-wing hosts. ...DN! I loved him. Replaced by... crap. How? Who owns the media in America?

POPSThe spread of the Black Death The story continues at the site. One of the dramatic results that was directly related to the deaths of large sectors of the population, was the shortage of laborers, which the land owners 'resented' (apparently now they were expected to pay laborers-sounds familiar.) The Roman Catholic Church was ineffectual against the plague. There are some who believe the black death allowed the Renaissance to develop

POPSNew Debate on 'Curing' Gays I think this represents a big changed in relatively little time. It wasn't so long ago that gays were reviled as "fags" or "queers" and homosexuality was considered and treated as a psychological disorder. No religious conservative--Catholic, Protestant, Jew, or Muslim--would stand up in the pulpit today and declare that blacks are inferior human beings. And it's only a matter of time before they stop calling gays and lesbians inferior also. For the very same reason: it contradicts God's love for all creation.

POPSIgnorant Homophobe I was aware of several facets of Palin's controversial life but this one struck me as particularly odd. It does fit in very well with her professed denial of evolution. Remember, this woman could be president, given McCain's age. Should we abandon the 21st Century again. It's been a strategy for the past 8 years that has not helped us very much. I, for one, am not ready to plunge us into the past. She has shown by her actions that she is uninterested in advancing rational thought.

POPSPope: So, you're not Catholic? Then you're not in true Church What do you think of this one, from your beloved Pope, Catholics? Please show me in scripture where Jesus talks about having to through the Pope rather than Gods himself? Also please do not recite Mathew 16: 13-20, the rock is not Peter but his confession, as being the rock and foundation of the church.
