Bush Has Been a Destructive President
oscarrob
by oscarrob  10-7-2008
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. I honestly believe that, as Biden said, you shouldn't question Bush's motives. The results, however have been destructive. Not only the policies but the attitude of superiority and entitlement that Bush brought has spilled over into so much of our lives that the destruction he has wrought will be felt for a very long time.

Church apologises to Charles Darwin over theory of evolution

But Dr Brown says everyone makes mistakes, the church included. "When a big new idea emerges that changes the way people look at the world, it's easy to feel that every old idea, every certainty, is under attack and then to do battle against the new insights,'' he writes.

GOP strategy: ditch issues, stir up anger at "them"
masbury
by masbury  9-12-2008
It's how you get "working class voters to vote against their own interests." It was also the strategy of Nixon/Agnew and patrician (but feigned folkster) GW Bush. And now, Sarah Palin takes the job.

End Times A-Coming?
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  9-8-2008
A recurring argument lodged by theists against atheists is their inabilitiy to understand how non-believers can exist in a world of no god-given purpose. Theists seem incapable of comprehending the simple (to me at least) idea that each of us fashions our own purpose and meaning in life. This article touches on that aspect of thought.

Drill Baby Drill?
trilogy01
by trilogy01  9-4-2008
Instead of oil drilling why don't we take all the money, time, and people power and put that into implementing the clean technologies that we already have. Getting off of oil completely with clean, renewable energy sources is the only way to help secure national security, achieve true energy independence, and stop polluting our environment.

Mark Morford on the GOP, Palin
papananook
by papananook  9-3-2008
More of this great column: To be sure, it's moments like these that make it difficult not to take some delight, not to sit back and feel the ironic righteousness melt over us like hot Cheez-Whiz over an Alaskan mooseburger. After all, Sarah Palin is anti-choice, pro-abstinence, anti sex-ed, religiously fundamentalist, a creationist, about as friendly to feminism and women's reproductive rights as John McCain is to his beloved "gooks." But here's the saddest part of all: Governor Palin knew. She absolutely had to realize that her daughter's unfortunate condition would come to light when McCain offered her this bizarre gig. To which we can only say: Way to shove your own daughter under the wheels of the GOP Machine, Governor Palin. Ultimate sacrifice indeed.

Afghan Militants Butcher American Soldiers
cptenaud
by cptenaud  8-15-2008    3
I didn't say anything about it here or elsewhere because a.) I didn't know what the families knew, and b.) I couldn't confirm it with anyone else. As for the soldiers being alive when captured, I still don't know with certainty whether or not that's true or just battlefield rumor. But everything else my source told me has turned out to be correct. The New York Times explains in more detail: The three were identified as Sgt. First Class Matthew L. Hilton, 37, of Livonia, Mich., of the Michigan Army National Guard; and Sgt. First Class Joseph A. McKay, 51, of Brooklyn; and Specialist Mark C. Palmateer, 38, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., both of them part of a reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition unit of the New York Army National Guard, according to a Pentagon news release. Their Afghan interpreter was 21-year-old Muhammad Fahim from Kabul, who had been working with the Americans for the last three years. His body was burned beyond recognition, his family said.

Expert concerned by DIY genetic tests
pokkets
by pokkets  8-6-2008
While DIY gene tests may have their place, often they can only highlight a factor, or give a likelihood rather than a certainty. I would think they would also tend to be used by people who expected to find problems. It being hard for their view of the results to be either objective, or subject to comparison with other possibilities and cases. I have trouble imagining a better test than family history, and the fact remains, that despite any number of tests our genes wont change.(Yet?) An interesting thing I heard which is somewhat related particularly with the statistics regarding the likelihood of cancer from any number of sources, is that by the age of 85 50% of people will have had some form of cancer. (One of the side effects of living for another generation.) I can't be sure of the accuracy of the figure, but it makes me feel more comfortable about smoking. At least if I'm going to get cancer, I can get it doing something I enjoy.

Can we learn to love uncertainty?

It is perhaps for that reason that the stories of those who discovered these uncertainties have been largely overlooked. Bee smart, or how human decide.
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-19-2008    1
The results were similar when the numerals 3 and 4 were replaced with easily distinguishable clouds of 30 and 60 dots. But when the numerals were replaced with clouds of 30 or 40 dots - making it much more difficult to distinguish between the two - subjects veered towards the more certain outcome. The researchers subjected honeybees to similar trials, using the bees' sense of smell and 2 microliter drops of sugar solution payoffs of varying concentrations. The bees tended towards the risky strategy only when their choice was easily discernable, paralleling their human counterparts.

It takes less arrogance to say that we have a variety of important issues – from the future collapse of social security, to global warming, to a struggling economy, to poor education, and to simply add, "I don’t know which one is the most important, which is why I want somebody with sufficient breadth of knowledge to deal with all of them."

Asteroid Impacts On Earth: A Protection Plan

Indeed, over billions of years, the Tree of Life here on Earth has been whacked time and time again by what Schweickart labeled as “the crazy cosmic gardener.” “The good news is that we can do something about this,” the former astronaut explained. “The marriage of we human beings and the machines that we’ve created are now at a level of capability which enables us to fire the crazy cosmic gardener. We can stop this process from occurring again.”
