Rules Committee Meeting Descends into Chaos
merrie
by merrie  Today 2:04 AM    2
Barton then asked whether there would be some period of time between House passage of the Senate bill and House passage of the HCR amendments. During that period of time, the president would sign the Senate HCR bill into law. For the House to amend the HCR law, Barton said, it has to be law, which means the president has to have signed it. "If he doesn't, it ain't a law," Barton said. Democratic Rep. Sander Levin jumped in. "We're going to be amending the law," he claimed. Waxman added, "We change current law, and the current law will be the Senate bill once it's voted on in the House." But it won't be law until the president signs it. Obviously, Democrats are performing such strange contortions because many of their members are scared of voting for a bill that will likely mean defeat for them in November. But their attempts to avoid responsibility have created some very basic problems. UPDATE 1: Faced with nervousness within their ranks, Democratic leaders

Chaos: Stupak proposal riles pro-choice Dems but shows Pelosi may not have the votes March 19, 2010 An attempt late Friday by Rep. Bart Stupak, a pro-life Michigan Democrat, to change abortion language in President Obama’s health care bill riled pro-choice lawmakers who vowed not to allow the revision. The move by Stupak, who holds a crucial bloc of Democratic votes that if released would clear the way for the health bill, threw Capitol Hill into confusion late Friday, less than two days before the House is set to vote on the landmark legislation. Stupak, leaving the Capitol, said that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s willingness to talk to him about his idea shows Democrats “don’t have the votes, or they wouldn’t be talking to me,” he said in an interview with The Hill’s Molly Hooper. It was not entirely clear how exactly Stupak’s proposal would work. Stupak is reportedly trying to change the abortion language through a procedure called a “concurrent resolution" .....

The clean up has begun in the capital after a freak storm swept across the region causing widespread damage and chaos on Friday afternoon. Rooves were blown off buildings, trees uprooted and boats upturned. "It's the worst storm I have see, it came up really fast, went from 15 knots in the north to more than 50 knots from the south just like that," says boatie Matt Wood.

Hot Springs National Park Trails Mar 15 2010
LeeHiller
by LeeHiller  3-15-2010
The sky was bright as I headed into the park, waiting for the sun to crest the tops of the highest trees. Although light was beginning to spread out on the ground as the sun shone between the trees, it was still twilight up in the highest branches. On the Tufa Terrace five different squirrels were foraging for nuts hidden in the leaves. On several occasions there were disagreements over area rights for nut hunting. While chaos ensued below a single Squirrel sat high in a tree enjoying a breakfast feast. It was perfect start to my morning in the park.

Why Are We Afraid to Tax the Super-Rich?
swampfoxz
by swampfoxz  3-13-2010    14
“Many plutocrats did just that. Indeed, last year’s wealth wasteland has become a billionaire bonanza. Most of the richest people on the planet have seen their fortunes soar in the past year.” Which brings us back to the federal budget. There are two sides to every ledger: the expenses…and the income. We need to start looking at the income side. With a fairer tax system, we could retrieve some of that money downpour that the elite has been siphoning away from us for decades. In the 1950s the marginal tax rate on those earning more than $3 million a year (in today’s dollars) was 91 percent. By 1990 it was 28 percent. The IRS says that the top 400 richest tax filers actually paid a rate of just 16 percent in 2007 (the latest numbers we have). Yep, the richest earners — people who took in an average of $343 million each — probably paid a lower rate than you did. Something to consider as you sign your 2009 return. By the way, those 400 people who do so well on tax day have a combi

Still With Obama, But Worried
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  3-11-2010
Although President Obama remains the most popular American politician, it's true many of his supporters are waiting for more results. Too much time wasted trying to be 'bipartisian,' with a bunch of rabid dogs. Next election talk already slipping into weekly news (helped by the fact of some early dramatic primaries and special elections showing some Tea Party chaos effects). The one big fact the rabid right misses is: They don't offer anything better. In fact, as far as issues, they offer nothing; just obstruction. As far as candidates -- that varies state by state. The political battle wages on, like a soccer (football) games that has no breaks. But I sense a tide is turning, for the better. There were just some extra rough hills to climb.

Oder was? Gold, pure gold! While they may not strike you as particularly funny, and Jim may not have meant them to be either, humor is in the eye of the beholder. Also, it’s pretty dang tough being funny about power-grabbing, Constitution-dismantling politicians when you’re limited to just 140 characters. You try it sometime. Keep ‘em coming, Jim… if we didn’t laugh at this ongoing chaos and outrage from our misguided, tone-deaf politicians once in a while, we’d most certainly cry. http://twitter.com/jimgeraghty Nice Deb: By The Way " Obama Was Wrong About Insurance Premiums http://bit.ly/9z6n5o Frugal Café Blog Zone: Olbermann Will Freak Out & Call These Health Care Protesters “Racists” & Obama’s Nose Picking During Summit (video) http://bit.ly/dwFlT1

Looks Like Freedom: Amazing Newsweek Photos from the Streets of Baghdad in 2010
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  3-2-2010    2
Never thought I'd be using the word "Amazing" and "Newsweek" in the same sentence. And liberals, it would be great to capture Osama bin Laden, but giving him a plea bargain so he’ll testify against the real terrorist, George W. Bush, probably won’t go over as well as you expect, kind of like Iraq. Iraq didn't go as well as you expected either. Saddam and his cronies aren't there killing and raping any longer. I guess I'll never understand what the Left has against freedom, but I could care less what they think anyway. And thankfully and most importantly, neither did George Bush. Victory in Iraq: Merrie's clip if you missed it: http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/D0B01D49-CFC2-4ED6-BAFE-14A51B618E9B/ Yes, that is Newsweek exclaiming "Victory in Iraq." It's on the cover of the March issue. Liberals were always comparing Iraq to Vietnam. I forget, did we win in Vietnam?

TQ | Should state gov's be at the table for national health care debate?
altaloman
by altaloman  2-22-2010
Let me get this straight? The Tennessee governor proposes that all state governors be invited to the national health care debate at this time. Perhaps it is the right thing, but why wasn't this proposed a year ago? And if governors join this debate, why not every other national legislative debate that affects the states? If we can't get 100 U.S. senators and 435 congressmen to agree on anything, what will adding 50 governors to the mix create? More chaos, for sure. ___ SOURCE | http://tiny.cc/altacities893 ___ SEARCH | http://tiny.cc/altacities190 ___
