Health Insurance Bankrupts Americans
JackieDel
by JackieDel  9-16-2009    4
A Harvard study found that 50 percent of all bankruptcy filings were partly the result of medical expenses. Every 30 seconds in the United States someone files for bankruptcy in the aftermath of a serious health problem. Consider the plight of David: David had to stop working as a truck driver after he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and has since been struggling to pay for COBRA during the two-year Medicare waiting period. His wife, Gloria, is his full-time caregiver and cannot work outside the home, and the couple has had to use much of their savings and borrow from friends and family to pay for their COBRA premiums. David cashed in his 401K at a 24 percent loss so that they will be able to continue to pay the COBRA premium until he is eligible for Medicare. Gloria tried to apply for Medicaid, but she learned that their income is too high. "There is not any help for people like us. We are not considered poor enough, but we don't have the money to pay it on our own," Gloria sa

To Name Their Kids, People Turn to Consultants
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  11-25-2007    2
More: Moss, who admits that she had doubts when she first launched her personal naming service. "I thought, 'Who's going to want to pay us to help name their baby?' But a lot of people really need an outside, third-party, independent input. I was surprised at the demand." Albert Mehrabian, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of California at Los Angeles and author of "The Baby Name Report Card." "The reaction your name prompts from other people can help form your personality. For example, Chad scored consistently high in all categories, while Bud ranked low – including a zero in the "successful" category. The worst names he has encountered include Fayle, Farm, and Latrina for girls, and Cobra, Jane, and Swindle for boys – "equivalent in intensity to the effects of dressing a boy in girls' clothing, or dying a child's hair blue or pink," he states in his findings. Alfie, a derivation of Alfred, means "one who counsels the elves

Are Meerkats Naturally Altruistic?
merrie
by merrie  8-9-2008    4
For centuries, there's been a debate over whether true altruism exists among humans. Helping others at our detriment is risky behavior, evolutionarily speaking. Say you're overcome with an urge to give your last piece of bread to someone else. The other person eats, but you don't. Ultimately, after enough of these selfless acts, you'll starve and die, and your dangerous habit of helping others should die along with you. In the animal kingdom, altruism poses an equally prickly problem to explain. Why some animals exhibit generosity is a real mystery to biologists. It's not like they're thinking about the tax write-off they can get by donating money. Meerkats have one of the most cooperative societies in the animal kingdom. These African desert dwellers are perfect subjects for an investigation into altruism. For one, they live in a harsh habitat, quite a long way from easy street. Danger lurks around every corner because they sit at the bottom of the food chain.

To charm or not to charm?
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  4-8-2009
Anti-Venom Serum used to treat snakebites, needs to be made by venom extracted from the snakes, and there is a shortage of the medicine. This gives rise to an opportunity for these snake charmers to use their skills at official farms that produce AVS. But unfortunately, they don’t have the means to start their own production, and there aren’t enough farms presently to employ them.

Rally for Rights
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  9-6-2009    48
Kathy Harper is typical of the morons who yell loudest but don't think. She was probably praying when they were teaching the Constitution in one of those "state run schools". Here's a reminder: "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare..." It's that little phrase about the general welfare! My guess is that after being shown this she still wouldn't walk away. What idiots. Sound and fury and no substance at all.

Reader Beware: This is a Michael Gordon piece, but at least we know he is a good stenographer for the White House and the Pentagon, so my guess this is as accurate as he can be. The only reason COBRA II was such a good book is because Gen. Trainor kept him honest.
