What is a Confessing Sam?
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-13-2008    5
Researchers ironically note that it is often just as difficult to know whether or not someone is telling the truth when they plead against themselves as when they plead for themselves. Dr S M Kassin and two colleagues from the Department of Psychology at Williams College in Massachusetts report in the April, 2005 Law and Human Behaviour that when college students and police investigators judged 10 prison inmates confessing to crimes (half the confessions were true, half were false as they were concocted for the study), the students were more accurate than the police in determining who told the truth. -More than 50 people confessed to having committed the famous and still unsolved Black Dahlia murder in Los Angeles in 1947. -At least six people have confessed to being the Zodiac Killer. -At last count, 20 individuals have confessed to the 1996 murder of child beauty queen Jon Benet Ramsey.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
righthand
by righthand  9-18-2007    3
Economic hit men (EHMs) are highly paid professionals who cheat countries around the globe out of trillions of dollars. They funnel money from the World Bank, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and other foreign "aid" organizations into the coffers of huge corporations and the pockets of a few wealthy families who control the planet's natural resources. Their tools included fraudulent financial reports, rigged elections, payoffs, extortion, sex, and murder. They play a game as old as empire, but one that has taken on new and terrifying dimensions during this time of globalization.

dakotayii
by dakotayii  5-10-2008    12
The father says, "That's terrible to overcharge your friends like that, that is way more than those two things cost. I'm going to take you to church and make you confess." They go to church and the father alerts the priest, and makes the little boy sit in the confession booth and closes the door. The boy says, "Dark in here." The priest says, "Don't start that shit again"

Smoke & Mirrors. American Justice (oxymoron?)
righthand
by righthand  2-13-2008    1
"In the case of al-Qahtani, Time magazine published the secret log of his 49 days of 20-hour-per-day interrogation. The log described how the prisoner was forcibly administered intravenous fluids and drugs and forcibly given enemas, in order to keep his body functioning well enough for the interrogations to go on. The log, titled Secret Orcon Interrogation Log Detainee 063 (pdf), offered a daily, detailed view of the interrogation techniques used to get confessions from him from November 2002 to January 2003. These included: • Restraint on a swivel chair for long periods; • Deprivation of sleep for long periods; • Loud music and white noise played to prevent him from sleeping; • Various humiliations, such as training him to act as a dog and wrapping him in an Israeli flag; • Lowering the temperature in the room, then throwing water into his face; • Forcing him to pray to Osama bin Laden. ...Guardian

What waterboarding looks like
enbar
by enbar  10-28-2006    28
Note that waterboarding was not created to elicit "actionable" intelligence, but rather was perfected a means of eliciting confessions, truthful or not. Anyone who believes these techniques are keeping Americans safer is a little too trusting. Also see this clip .

When I first saw this piece I was sure it was a parody, possibly from The Onion. But no! This guy seems to be for real. He's associated with the Creation Science Association of Mid-America and this was published in the CSA News. Hmmm, I wonder if their secessionists too?

TORTURE - that's what it is!
egoldstein
by egoldstein  9-29-2006    6
Makes me sick to think we are now using the very torture techniques we learned from North Korea, the Soviet Union and other Cold War enemies. This behavior should never be justified or advocated by any civilized society...and the politicians who are endorsing and/or acquiesing to pressue to allow should be ashamed of themselves. I found this article via reddit.com

Confessions of a Lonely Schizoid
abailart

<<<Yes, in my burrow, in my solitary thoughts, I dream my dreams. But they are the dreams of "the undeveloped heart." I dwell in my burrow with a gallery of images, the images of a plethora of people: the monstrous and the good -- some unbelievably good. They remain phantoms, however. I lack the ability to care enough about another person; I suffer from a deficiency of the capacity for love, joy, and empathy to occupy myself with real people. The passageways of my burrow are redolent of indifference: the benign but vaguely repellent odor of emotional emptiness.>>>

Republicans who like Spankings (a year of fond memories)

by marszal  9-10-2007    5
Oh you sexy sexy conservative big boys, gay-bashing by day and lurking in mens bathrooms by night - so naughty! Good to know that deep down inside theres a little rainbow in all of you. Oh yeah and check out Haggards ripped boyfriend - would of figured him the top type but guess I called that wrong! This isn't mature content this is a serious trend in conservative politics. Seriously now, allegations and confessions are piling up I just picked out the four biggest profile cases, don't be surprised if there are more. Not all these guys are proved guilty but you read it and evaluate it. Look around - new republicans on the block? Do you feel safe as a homophobic straight man? By the way anyone wanna pitch in on making a Republican Hotties 2008 calender?

Vatican publishes Knights Templar papers
pokkets
by pokkets  10-12-2007    2
Found in Vatican archives in 2001, they document the trial of the order in the 14th century. The order was suppressed in 1312 by Pope Clement V. The Cardinals concluded the Templars were guilty of abuses, but not 'real heresy'. 800 copies will be made available in a limited edition. There are details of the contents at the Vatican Archives site:http://asv.vatican.va/en/doc/1308.htm

Confessions from U.S. Soldiers in Iraq on the Brutal Treatment of Civilians
Rasmus
by Rasmus  7-20-2007    1
Continuing, same source : Some participated in such killings; others treated or investigated civilian casualties after the fact. Many also heard such stories, in detail, from members of their unit. The soldiers, sailors and marines emphasized that not all troops took part in indiscriminate killings. Many said that these acts were perpetrated by a minority. But they nevertheless described such acts as common and said they often go unreported -- and almost always go unpunished.

Tips and Tricks for dealing with your cellphone company (From a Sprint sales rep)
lordthor
by lordthor  3-8-2007
My favorite: "Want to cancel but are stuck in a contract and don't care about keeping your number? Change your billing to e-billing (to avoid a paper statement), call customer care and have them change your address to an address not covered by the network (go on the website, find a hole, do a google earth search and find an address around there). Then say, "oh my, well if you can't provide service to me there, I'll have to cancel." Sprint is now obligated to cancel your contract without a termination fee because if they can't service you, how can they charge you for service? Usually they want to cancel your number, but you might be able to convince them that Company B has coverage and you would like to port.
