Could an Acid Trip Help to overcome anxiety ?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-5-2008    17
This is an important article. I believe that psychedelic drugs not only have highly valuable therapeutic properties, but they can serve when responsibly used, to expand one's consciousness and boost intelligence and creativity in many aspects of life. The use of psychedelic drugs is one of those case where something which is highly beneficial to the individual is arbitrarily banned by the 'system' because the system do not want us too conscious, or too creative, not even too intelligence. All these threat the stability of the system while promoting independent thought. It is worth mentioning that the family of psychedelic drugs DO NOT contain dangerous addicting drugs such as opium, heroin, cocaine, crack, meth, etc.

Pay Attention
egoldstein
by egoldstein  10-12-2006    2
A very underrated and neglected thing to do. I really find that most people don't pay much attention to things most of the time. For whatever reason, i tend to be someone who pays very close attention to everything. I guess if you think about it, clipmarks is kind of about paying attention to what you're reading and capturing the finer points that others may overlook (a stretch?) I've noticed that my daughter pays incredible attention to her surroundings and i think it's had an incredible impact on her ability to learn to speak.

Nothing Lasts Forever, Not Even Belgium
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  9-21-2007    6
Belgium: the country where other European countries go to fight their apocalyptic wars. Flemish: Somehow not quite Dutch, but only they can tell the difference. Waffles: Yum. Endives: Not as boring as lettuce. White asparagus: whiter than regular asparagus, I guess. Eels in garlic sauce: okay, now that's taking it a bit too far... Yes, for those who thought you could take things for granted, and who just assumed that such a stalwart pillar of modern nationhood as Belgium would be around forever: prepare for extreme-right xenophobic "Flemish" nationalist Filip (Philip to those filthy Wallonians) Dewinter to rock your world: "It's 'bye-bye Belgium' time!" Indeed, it is a sad day for humanity, and a bitter personal defeat for me, being as I had long argued that Chocolate and Beer were in fact enough to keep a nation of feuding and indistinguishable ethnic groups together. Guess I can't be right all the time!

What Cats Know About War

Read the rest at the source. In a place where we could do little else... the tally became a measure of one small thing we could do to favour life over death. Animals are often forgotten victims of war and disasters. Hats off to all who will spare a thought for the poor animals who get caught up in the miseries of mankind too. Good luck Scooter and family! .:)

The Theology of American Empire
Johanna_G
by Johanna_G  11-7-2007    6
Continuing: The liberals were starry-eyed fools, Niebuhr charged, because they trusted people to be reasonable enough to resolve international conflicts peacefully. They forgot the harsh reality of original sin. Niebuhr wrapped that traditional notion of sin in a new intellectual package and sold it successfully, not only to theologians but to the foreign policy elite. Since the 1940s, foreign policy has largely been reduced to an endless round of debates about how to apply Niebuhr's "realism." Policymakers who still tried to follow the Social Gospel path have been marginalized and stigmatized with the harshest epithet a Niebuhrian can hurl: "unrealistic.” Many policymakers, like much of the public at large, have come to find a strange comfort in the world as Niebuhr described it. They see a jungle where evildoers, who are all around, must be hunted down and destroyed. Though frightening, this world can easily become the stage for simplistic dramas of good against evil.

That's the New York I used to know (and love). People act like they don't give a shit, but they look out for one another in a real emergency. This is the train I used to take to work every day; it happened about a dozen blocks uptown from where i used to live.

Do we share Earth with alternative life forms?
gzyra
by gzyra  7-4-2007    1
"The reason why biology’s standard tools would fail to detect an RNA-based organism is because they assume that all metabolisms must be similar to our own." “Why did life have to happen only once on Earth? There’s no real deep reason why.” "One way to find out is to try to create alternative life-forms ourselves and see how they do alongside their bacterial brethren."

Giant Bioluminescent Squid Captured on Video for First Time!
Kore7
by Kore7  2-18-2007    1
Terrifying! The YouTube link is OK, but see the full-size, high-frame-rate Quicktime version on nature.com to see this rare animal in all its lit-up glory. Like something out of a James Cameron movie.... Remains of Taningia danae often show up in the stomachs of sperm whales. The squid's flabby flesh led experts to think that it floats in the water column like a neutrally buoyant scuba diver. But the new footage shows it can reach speeds of up to 9 kilometres per hour. When presented with bait, the squid attacked, flashing its luminescent spots, or 'photophores', which contain glowing bacteria. It produced longer glows when faced with the bait rig's lights, suggesting that it was performing some sort of mating dance.

Caesar's Last Breath
pokkets
by pokkets  2-4-2008    3
Caesar's last breath, is the common title for an illustration of the way atoms are distributed and redistributed in the atmosphere. Caesar is an example (He's fairly well known) but the same applies to anyone and anything that has taken a breath in the history of the planet. The same principle would generally apply to soluble elements in water, but I can't be sure of the rate. The magnitude of the number of atoms in a liter, or a pint is beyond imagination. I first learned about it in chemistry at school, when I first heard about Avagadro's number. 6.08x10^23 i.e 6.08 with 23 zeros. Makes a gigabyte seem tiny. The number of Atoms in a mole. A mole is a weight according to the weight of an Atom. For example a mole of Hydrogen, one proton with an atomic weight of 1 weighs 1gram. Add the protons and neutrons and you get the weight. While this may seem complicated every mole of a gas is about 22 Litres I thought it was worth mentioning, because it is a mind boggling number.

Good vibrations may help reduce falls
pokkets
by pokkets  6-30-2008
Older people can have difficulty exercising, or be 'chairbound', and this can affect their balance. It keeps getting harder to exercise, affecting balance, and muscle strength. The vibrating platform, was tested by checking the improvement by recording the time they could stand on one leg, they generally showed improved balance. They tested for balance, but osteoporosis , and deep vein thrombosis, are thought to become more likely as activity decreases. This platform, and the vibrations could also provide the muscle movement that can alleviate these conditions as well.

Oh you sexy sexy conservative big boys, gay-bashing by day and lurking in mens bathrooms by night - so naughty! Good to know that deep down inside theres a little rainbow in all of you. Oh yeah and check out Haggards ripped boyfriend - would of figured him the top type but guess I called that wrong! This isn't mature content this is a serious trend in conservative politics. Seriously now, allegations and confessions are piling up I just picked out the four biggest profile cases, don't be surprised if there are more. Not all these guys are proved guilty but you read it and evaluate it. Look around - new republicans on the block? Do you feel safe as a homophobic straight man? By the way anyone wanna pitch in on making a Republican Hotties 2008 calender?

What is Thought? (book review)
wildcat

"One thing that most impressed me about the book is the underlying theme that he refers to as his version of Occam's razor and summarizes as follows: mind is a complex but still compact program that captures and exploits the underlying compact structure of the world. To understand something about the world is to capture its features in a compact subroutine that allows one to effectively interact with it.
