When Human Rights Extend to Nonhumans
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-13-2008    5
The 300 apes in Spanish zoos would not be freed, but better conditions would be mandated. Meanwhile, even in democracies, the law accords diminished rights to many humans: children, prisoners, the insane, the senile. Teenagers may not vote, philosophers who slip into dementia may be lashed to their beds, courts can order surgery or force-feeding. Spain’s Catholic bishops attacked the vote as undermining a divine will that placed humans above animals. One said such thinking led to abortion, euthanasia and ethnic cleansing.

Most older adults have brain disease: study
Deepti
by Deepti  12-30-2007
Older persons can often handle one pathology in their brain, but the burden of more than one pathology may tip them over the threshold of clinical dementia Therefore, prevention of not only Alzheimer's disease but these other pathologies, particularly stroke and those things that may increase the risk of stroke, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, obesity, "are likely to significantly decrease the prevalence of dementia

Intergenerational School: Empowers Elderly to Stay Active
urbanlife
by urbanlife  6-17-2008    5
K-6th school in Cleveland welcomes volunteers in their 80s & 90s, some with Alzheimer's or dementia. The founders believe volunteering gives the elderly a sense of purpose and happiness, as well as many health benefits. TIS fosters an educational community of excellence that provides experiences and skills for life-long learning and spirited citizenship for learners of all ages. TIS encourages communities to create new environments that empower learners of all ages, as they become life-long contributors to a society. TIS incorporates community volunteers into the life of the school. Volunteers perform a variety of tasks from painting and setting up classrooms to mentoring young readers and writers. TIS is a free public school. Founder of TIF, Peter Whitehouse, believes when some people are diagnosed with Alzheimer's, they feel shame and withdraw themselves from society, so engagement is necessary for older people who have aging-associated cognitive challenges.

Exciting new Alzheimer's Research
Socratoad
by Socratoad  1-11-2008    6
Prior to injecting the drug, the cognitive ability of the patient was measured. Researchers said he was unable to handle simple arithmetic and could not remember the names or even two animals. Just 10 minutes after he was injected with the new molecule, he was calmer and was able to recall his place of residence.

shunyax

Models such as this one could also be useful in diagnosing disorders of language or helping students pick up a foreign language. In semantic dementia, for example, people lose the ability to remember the meanings of things - shown a picture of a chihuahua, they can only recall 'dog', for example - but little is known about what exactly goes wrong in the brain. “We could look at what the neural encoding is for this,” says Mitchell.

Organic food 'better' for heart
Caleythia
by Caleythia  7-5-2007    6
That's great, but it would be better if they would make the food more accessible to the average person. In the markets near me, organic food is nearly double the price of inorganic. The average person shopping on a budget (ie. the majority of people) just can't afford that.
