October 21st, 2009 by Key October 14, 2009, the 30th annual awards ceremony of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund took place at the Asia Society in New York City. Lu Guang from People’s Republic of China won the $30,000 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography for his documentary project “Pollution in China.” August of 1993 he returned to post-graduate studies at the Central Arts and Design Academy in Beijing (now is the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University). During graduate school, he studied, traveled all over the country and carved out a career, became the “dark horse” of the photographer circle in Beijing. Skilled at social documentary photography, his insightful, creative and artistic work often focused on “social phenomena and people living at the bottom of society”, attracted the attentions of the national photography circle and the media. Many of his award winning works focused on social issues like, “gold rush in the west”, “drug

Ai: I did say it’s a “pretend smile.” I was questioning whether it’s possible for a society that doesn’t have democracy to excite the joys and celebrations of its people. Q: What disappoints you about China’s Olympic effort? Ai: The biggest disappointment is that China has fallen short of its promises, which is, “One World One Dream,” or to show the world a “New China, New Beijing, New Olympics.” I doubt there’s anything new here. What we’re seeing are the deep-rooted lack of courage and confidence, and the want for real happiness and civil participation. Instead, we see more of inept management and a blind sense of self-defense. Q: How can China benefit from the Olympics? Ai: Maybe China and its people will further realize that today’s world cannot be divided. China has common political, cultural and economic interests with the rest of the world. The wheels lift the structures well above the meadow, keeping the footprint of each hut to the barest minimum, making for a low-tech and low-impact design. The construction of each identical hut is very simple. It is just an offset steel clad box on a steel platform with a wood deck on top. Unlike a typical mobile home, less than half of the space on each structure is indoor space; outdoor decks comprise 55% of the usable space. While the interiors leave some design issues unsolved, the exteriors are well thought out. They are built of simple, durable and no-maintenance materials – steel, plywood and car-decking. No effort is made to soften this reality. The steel exterior is just allowed to rust naturally. The huts are “grouped as a herd” while each faces a view of the mountains (and away from the other structures), they are also gathered together as a unit.
