POPSWhy you should go with your gut feeling To uncover this ability, Pessiglione and colleague Chris Frith, of University College London, tested 20 volunteers with a simple game based on winning and losing small amounts of money. On a computer screen, the volunteers watched an animated abstract pattern which for a couple of tenths of a second included one of three symbols part way through. Unbeknownst to the subjects, the symbols indicated whether they would lose or gain £1 or break even if they accepted the gamble. Surprisingly, subjects got better at predicting whether they would win or not, eventually plateauing at slightly above chance, strong evidence that volunteers do not consciously notice the symbols but are affected by them nonetheless.

POPSFrom the horse's mouth: McCain's health-care advisor's personal blog McCain's health-care advisor, John Goodman, thinks we should deal with the problem of uninsured Americans by ordering the Census Bureau to stop calling people "uninsured." I kid you not. He says that since pretty much everyone ends up getting the medical care they need somehow or other, no one's really uninsured. If you read the whole post, you'll also see that Goodman is a little confused about how employer-provided health plans work in real life. This is also the same guy who recently said, commenting on health disparities between whites and nonwhites in the U.S., that "doctors just don’t control our over-eating, over-smoking, over-drinking, and shoot-outs in the hood." POPSI'm Pro Choice but I Agree with the Bush Administration on This One I'm all for a woman's right to choose if she wants to end a pregnancy. But surprisingly, I'm with the Bush administration on protecting healthcare workers who wish not to be involved in abortions. Just as a woman should have the right to choose (after consulting with the father of course), doctors and other healthcare professionals should be able to choose not to participate in procedures they are inherently against.

POPSThe Hollow Lives of the Happy <<<Who wouldn't question this apparently hollow form of American happiness? Aren't all of us late at night, when we're honest with ourselves, opposed to shallow happiness? Most likely we are, but isn't it possible that many of us fall into superficiality without knowing it? Aren't some of us so smitten with the American dream that we have become brainwashed into believing that our sole purpose on this earth is to be happy? Doesn't this unwitting affection for happiness over sadness lead us to a one-sided life, to bliss without discomfort, bright noon with no night? My sense is that most of us have been duped by the American craze for happiness. We might think that we're leading a truly honest existence, when we're really just behaving as predictably and artificially as robots, falling easily into well-worn "happy" behaviors, into the conventions of contentment.>>>

POPSStem cells could allow 'blood farms' One of the issues recently has been the shelf life of blood, where the rotation principle-first in first out can leave blood 'stale' and unsafe. There is also the fact that the contributions cannot meet the demand, and the increase in surgery that requires large volumes of blood. Transplant, and heart surgery being prime examples. They have been searching for a means of producing blood artificially, but the prospect of using stem cells, makes it more likely to be a reality. One of the most important aspects is that the red cells have no nucleus, so no nucleic DNA. A fact that can relieve many ethical, and practical problems.
