Puck Fair: Ireland's Oldest Fair
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  8-3-2008    5
It is said that in recognition of the service rendered by the goat, the people decided to institute a special festival in his honour and this festival has been held ever since. Other legends regarding the origin of "King Puck" relates to the time of Daniel O'Connell, who in 1808 was an unknown barrister. It seems that before that year, the August fair held in Killorglin had been a toll fair, but an Act of the British Parliament empowered the Viceroy or Lord Lieutenant in Dublin to make an order, at his own discretion, making it unlawful to levy tolls at cattle, horse or sheep fairs. Tolls in Killorglin at this time were collected by the local landlord - Mr Harman Blennerhassett - who had fallen into bad graces with the authorities in Dublin Castle and as a result the Viceroy robbed him of his right to levy tolls. Blennerhassett enlisted the services of the young Daniel O'Connell, who in an effort to reverse the decision decided that goats were not covered by the document and that th

The Twelve Apostles and Bloody Sunday (original)
righthand
by righthand  7-18-2008    3
Like America, we had out War of Independence followed by a bloody Civil War on the issue of independence. This was also in common with many other states that gained independence. We didn't gain full independence until 1948 when we took it without a shot being fired. We did lose 6 of our 9 counties of Ulster, our northern providence. Hopefully some day our "four green fields" will be reunited peacefully. By Bush&Co's definition all our leaders would have been terrorists like Nelson Mandela , just like your own revered insurrectionists/freedom fighters/terrorists/founding fathers. Our longest serving PM and president de Valera would have been executed along with the 1916 Rising leaders only he was born in America.

"Haughton's Drop", Hanging, Dublin Zoo, Darwin, Wallace, history
righthand
by righthand  7-11-2008    2
Haughton House in Dublin Zoo is being restored to its ancient glories in honour of the great patron and scientist. On a visit to Bronx Park, New York he became a bit bored by the record of perfection which he received on all sides, so he enquired about the financial aspect of the institution: how did they pay for their obviously princely expenditure? So-and-so, he was told, but of course the main source of income was gate-money. “What ?” asked Haughton, “do you mean you charge people to get in?” “Of course; don’t you?” “Oh! no - we let them in free; then we enlarge one of our celebrated lions and charge them to get out! We do better that way.”

Canadian Wins Major International Book Prize
righthand
by righthand  6-23-2008    8
De Niro's Game , which follows characters caught in the civil war in Beirut in the 1980s, is "a magnificent achievement for a writer writing in a third language," the five-member international jury said in its citation. "Its originality, its power, its lyricism, as well as its humane appeal all mark De Niro's Game as the work of a major literary talent and make Rawi Hage a truly deserving winner." The Beirut-born writer, who lived through nine years of civil war in the Lebanese capital before his family emigrated to Canada, called himself "a fortunate man. "After a long journey of war, displacement and separation, I feel that I am one of the few wanderers who is privileged enough to have been rewarded, and for that I am very grateful."

Elan and Wyeth Release Alzheimer's Results
Matthew Herper
by Matthew Herper  6-17-2008
Elan and Wyeth have released results of a phase 2 study of bapineuzumab, an attempt at treating Alzheimer's that is the most watched drug in the pharmaceutical business right now. Plenty to puzzle over. There seems to be a consistent effect in patients who don't carry a genetic variant called APOE4, which raises the risk of Alzheimer's. Why would high-risk patients be the ones to who didn't get a benefit? That will need some explaining. It also hurts confidence in the study that the subgroups that show benefit were done after the study finished, not specified beforehand. But this is still pretty good data. Full results will be presented at a medical meeting later this summer. Late-stage trial results won't be available for a couple years.
