One of The Biggest Bait-And-Switch Acts in History
merrie
by merrie  10-27-2009    1
I'm thinking it's time to pronounce Obama and his agenda precisely what they are - socialist and looking to bring down the last great remaining free capitalist system in the world so as to bring it in line with too much else of a statist world. What else can one call it with any degree of honesty? Certainly liberal no longer serves. The Left abandoned classic liberalism a decade ago. And the New Left has only gotten worse. It's time to draw the battle lines more clearly, start speaking of what freedom, capitalism, individualism and self-determinism actually are and explain to people how they won't be much of anything in some new Obama-designed state. It's time to forget about compromise and begin rejecting Obama and his grand plans completely as he and they deserve for being un-American in the most important meanings of the word. Obama sold his healthcare proposal as a way to reduce costs and help the economy. But, Pawlenty says,

U.K. Economic Contraction Is Longest on Record
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-23-2009
The British economy has now contracted for six successive quarters, making this the longest downturn since the agency started its data series in 1955. And it is starting to further lag behind the 16-member euro area, where France and Germany are contributing to broad improvements in manufacturing, services and consumer demand. Jean-Michel Six, chief European economist at Standard & Poor’s, said the divergence appeared to stem from the higher level of consumer indebtedness in Britain. “U.K. consumers are coming out of a period of very significant leveraging, and the process of unwinding that is long and painful,” he said. “You would expect savings rates to grow and credit demand to fall, weighing on the economy.” Meanwhile, German business confidence in October rose to its highest level in 13 months, according to the Ifo economic research institute in Munich.

Herschel scans hidden Milky Way
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-2-2009    1
Herschel intends to study large regions of the Milky Way in its combined Spire-Pacs scanning mode. The instruments will, of course, also work independently. The mission is due to go into routine operations in the next few weeks. However, its third instrument is currently down after experiencing a fault. Engineers can switch to a back-up system to reactivate the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared (HiFi), but they do not intend to do that until they have satisfied themselves the cause the anomaly is properly understood. The Dutch-led HiFi is a spectrometer that will identify elements and molecules in the clouds of gas and dust which give rise to stars. Gulf oil to drop dollar-denominated pricing
enbar
by enbar  10-5-2009    1
Starting in 2018, the Gulf states will no longer sell their oil for dollars. They will instead use a "basket" structure which will include Chinese, Japanese, and European currencies, gold, and a yet-to-be-created common Gulf currency. This could, to put it mildly, have very far-reaching effects.

new regulations coming into place in Germany from 31 Oct 09 dictate that banks can place an excess of up to 150 for any transaction made on a lost bank card. also, online transactions done in online banking will no longer be undo-able. an attempt to combat carelessness? or just a questionable scheme distancing the banks even more from the lowly consumer?

Obama Heads For Foreign Policy Disaster
merrie
by merrie  9-18-2009    2
The U.S. is applying pressure to Israel, because Israel is susceptible to U.S. pressure, in hopes of gaining concessions from the Palestinians, who are not. The process is the diplomatic equivalent of a drunk searching for his key under the streetlamp"because it's brighter there. The approach has never worked before, but repeated failure does not seem to have discouraged Obama from trying yet again. Not everything that goes wrong in the world is the president's fault, of course. Vladimir Putin's Russia would behave aggressively no matter who was president, just as any president would confront the same unappealing range of options in Pakistan. But the very intractability of such problems makes it more important to do right what can be done right. Despite the domestic focus of these early months of his presidency, Barack Obama thinks of himself as a foreign policy thinker above all, according to those who know him best. His confidence is undiminished by his lack . . .

Dutch cannabis coffee shops ban tourists
Aribeth
by Aribeth  9-14-2009    2
In another unintended consequence, several border towns complain of the burdens associated with a weekly influx of tens of thousands of tourists, mainly Belgian, French and German. Among recent steps taken to deal with these problems, Amsterdam has said it would halve its number of coffee shops, citing criminality, while other cities are to close those within a certain radius of schools.

Cameron slaps down NHS 'traitor' MEP
foxyarse
by foxyarse  8-15-2009    1
Mr Hannan, who has long campaigned for the NHS to be dismantled and replaced with a system of 'personal health accounts' once described the service as a '60-year mistake'. Earlier in the week he used a speech in Washington to claim that the service was a 'Marxist system' and warned Americans to 'ponder our example and tremble'. Insisting he sees the NHS as one of our great national institutions, Mr Cameron accused Mr Hannan of being eccentric. He added: 'No one should be in any doubt, for the Conservative Party, the NHS is our number one priority.'

EU (still) bullying Ireland to Ratify Fascist Treaty
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  7-29-2009    1
Long article at source well worth a read. "By voting No the Irish remain full members of the EU and of the euro currency based on the existing Nice Treaty, but must reject the proposed Lisbon Treaty as a step too far. Millions of Europeans who are being denied referendums on Lisbon by their politicians are hoping that Ireland will say No AGAIN for their sakes. Ireland can thereby open the way for a better Treaty for a better and more democratic Europe." If this gets signed it will mark the end of any kind of Democracy or Republic in Europe just as the North American Union, Asian Union and the already existing African Union will and Have. Without mincing my words it is open DICTATORSHIP.
