Dollars for Oil is now Euros for Oil
ericskiff
by ericskiff  4-15-2008    5
The opening of the Iranian Oil Bourse (which coincidentally happened to be delayed by a bunch of internet cables being severed underwater) trades in Euros. That means that the world no longer has to get dollars first to buy oil, and could continue to have a drastic effect on the value of the dollar.

New France Law: Thin Models Illegal!
righthand
by righthand  4-15-2008    4
The bill reflects concerns about pro-anorexic (so-called pro-ana) websites, said to encourage extreme weight loss. But Boyer said the legislation's impact would be wide-ranging. The bill is the latest in a series of measures to be proposed following the 2006 anorexia-linked death of a Brazilian model prompted efforts to tackle eating disorders within the fashion industry. Didier Grumbach, president of the influential French Federation of Couture, said: "Never will we accept in our profession that a judge decides if a young girl is skinny or not skinny. That doesn't exist in the world, and it will certainly not exist in France." Marleen S Williams, a psychology professor at Brigham Young University in Utah, who researches the media's effect on anorexic women, said it was almost impossible to prove that the media causes eating disorders. She said studies showed fewer eating disorders in "cultures that value full-bodied women". But she added that she fears the new French law,

Israeli/French BANKS Money Laundering on Grand Scale
righthand
by righthand  2-4-2008    6
"Embattled French bank Societe Generale faces fresh troubles Monday when a trial opens in Paris involving a vast money laundering scam between France and Israel. Four banks, including Societe Generale, and 138 people, including the bank's chairman Daniel Bouton, are on trial over the multi-million dollar scam that allegedly began in the late 1990s. The other banks include Societe Marseillaise de Credit, Barclays France and the National Bank of Pakistan. Societe Generale revealed late last month it had lost a staggering 4.8 billion euros (7.1 billion dollars) in the biggest rogue trading scandal in history. Takeover talk is now swirling around France's third largest bank, with two French banks eyeing a possible bid on Societe Generale. " ...AFP

Earlier this month, Monsanto reported a fourth quarter loss of $233m (£147m), driven mostly by a drop in sales of its Roundup brand. It would be quite a result if this led to some of their other products like Aspartame being investigated publicly.

"Yes the Taliban Repeatedly Raped Me... But They Respected Me"
merrie
by merrie  6-9-2009    2
referred to Joanie de Rijke’s case. “She was raped, but she was not angry. The journalist who went looking for the Taliban in Afghanistan saw her curiosity end in a cruel ordeal of multiple rape. While this would make others angry or sad, this journalist shows understanding. She says: ‘They also respected me.’ And she was given tea and biscuits.” “This story” Wilders said, “is a perfect illustration of the moral decline of our elites. They are so blinded by their own ideology that they turn a blind eye to the truth. Rape? Well, I would put this into perspective, says the leftist journalist: the Taliban are not monsters. Our elites prefer to deny reality rather than face it. One would expect: a woman is being raped and finds this unbearable. But this journalist is not angry because the Muslim involved also showed respect. Our elites, whether they are politicians, journalists, judges, subsidy gobblers or civil servants, are totally clueless.

Would I even bother to celebrate? Where would you put the money, given the current economic woes, which are getting darker not brighter. Remember that there are limits on the exportation of cash (can't hedge with Euros) and a massive gold or silver buy could cause a run-up in the market. I suppose international mutual funds are the best bet. Your thoughts?

Tourists stay away. US Arrogant, Crass, Rude, Greed

"We treat foreigners as criminals until proved otherwise. We're no more helpful once a visitor arrives. There's an international symbol -- an outline of an airplane -- used on direction signs all over Europe, Asia and in Mexico. Not here. "Costs too much to add signs for all them furaners." That's what a highway official once told me when I asked about fixing this. " "Why are people turned away? Scruffiness, unsuitability, past contributions to Greenpeace or general ickiness. Read the State Department guidelines -- visitors must satisfy consular officers that they deserve to enter. But consular officials do not have to explain reasons for rejection, and they don't."
