Keep the government out of the news business
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  11-6-2009
Turning to Washington for help to save the declining news business says much about the mentality of mainstream journalism leaders, an attitude that we and the government are on the same side. This is the mentality that led to the news establishment’s acceptance of the Iraq War. Go to the clip to learn what happened to Mother Jones after becoming a tax exempt non-profit after it reported on lobbying in Washington. Once you allow the government or private corporation to have any controlling link to the media you lose independence. Editors become fearful of criticizing the hand that feeds it. Publishers and benefactors become cozy and unbiased reports become fewer and fewer. Journalism becomes a de facto advertisement for consumer products. We hope in the future we’ll see more I.F. Stones, more guerrilla warriors on the Web, in print and on the air. Because of them—and not because of a government handout—great reporting will survive, as it always has.

Twitter Talks Data With Microsoft, Google — All Things Digital
merrie
by merrie  10-8-2009    2
All this without tarnishing the noisy service as a shill, because it lets you listen to only what you want. The deals would be nonexclusive and may not happen, All Things Digital reports " which only feeds the casual cred Twitter has been cultivating, taking its time about coming up with a business model that produces operating revenue, while it rakes in VC money at a level that values the three-year-old private company at about $1 billion. The “Let them do it” philosophy works like a charm for Twitter, whose content comes from the general public and whose best interfaces come from third-party developers making full use of the company’s freely available API. Along with the recently announced “lists” initiative, Twitter seems to be carefully setting the table so that partners can leverage its data " and the way it is organized " to enter new markets, while it sits back and maintains a server farm.

Newborn Baby Owes Her Nine Months Of Rent
foxyarse

"She has a good case." said Mr. Shylock. "She never saw this guy before today, and he's been living inside her rent free. He kicked the walls of her rental space all the time and kept her up all night. He never paid a dime, and that's not right. Taxpayers should pick up the bill." said the scumbag. Ms. McMuffin said she usually breast-feeds her newborns, but not this time. "Why should I, it's my milk." she stated. "Mr. Shylock said I should charge $5.00 for each aquirt, but I want more. I'm gonna to get another lawyer." she said.

Much Of Traditional Journalism Went Backwards
merrie
by merrie  9-29-2009    2
and were so badly in the tank for one candidate in 2008 that 90 percent of the public can see it. As ABC’s Michael Malone wrote in October of 2008: I also happen to believe that most reporters, whatever their political bias, are human torpedoes . . .and, had they been unleashed, would have raced in and roughed up the Obama campaign as much as they did McCain’s. That’s what reporters do, I was proud to have been one, and I’m still drawn to a good story, any good story, like a shark to blood in the water. So why weren’t those legions of hungry reporters set loose on the Obama campaign? Who are the real villains in this story of mainstream media betrayal? The editors. The men and women you don’t see; the people who not only decide what goes in the paper, but what doesn’t; the managers who give the reporters their assignments and lay-out the editorial pages. They are the real culprits. Picture yourself in your 50s in a job where you’ve spent 30 years

Internet Providers Push Back Against 'Net Neutrality' Proposal

expanding the rules to cover wireless networks. The company would be "very disappointed if has already drawn a conclusion to regulate wireless services despite the absence of any compelling evidence of problems or abuse that would warrant government intervention," said Jim Cicconi, AT&T's senior executive vice president of external and legislative affairs. FCC officials said they would work with phone companies to develop rules that wouldn't create problems for wireless networks. "I am convinced that there are few goals more essential in the communications landscape than preserving and maintaining an open and robust Internet," Mr. Genachowski said in his speech Monday at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. Strengthening FCC rules on Web traffic is a top priority of consumer groups and Internet advocates who supported President Barack Obama in his run for the White House.

Healthy eaters putting wild fish stocks at risk
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-9-2009    4
In order for fish to properly produce the desired omega-3 fatty acids they need to eat other wild fish. Raising fish in farms, essentially hand feeding them, does not allow fish to produce the desired healthy properties for which fish are valued. Herbaceous fish, such as tilapia, carp and trout are fed fishmeal and oil solely to increase their yields. These fish are beneficial to humans without the further depletion of wild fish. So what you say? This practice places an unnecessary strain on already over fished wildlife and unfavorably affects the price of fish. Farm fish do not taste as good as wild fish, they are not as healthy for us as wild fish and they are endangering wild fish habits wherever farm fisheries are built. This article on Salmon fisheries should get your attention: http://www.farmedanddangerous.org/news/148

How our brains are hardwired to love Google, Twitter, and texting. And why that's dangerous.
patchworkthreads
by patchworkthreads  8-14-2009    1
"The system is also activated by particular types of cues that a reward is coming. In order to have the maximum effect, the cues should be small, discrete, specific—like the bell Pavlov rang for his dogs. Panksepp says a way to drive animals into a frenzy is to give them only tiny bits of food: This simultaneously stimulating and unsatisfying tease sends the seeking system into hyperactivity. Berridge says the "ding" announcing a new e-mail or the vibration that signals the arrival of a text message serves as a reward cue for us. And when we respond, we get a little piece of news, making us want more. These information nuggets may be as uniquely potent for humans as a Froot Loop to a rat. When you give a rat a minuscule dose of sugar, it engenders "a panting appetite," Berridge says—a powerful and not necessarily pleasant state."

As Twitter grows, so does the noise it produces
egoldstein
by egoldstein  8-25-2009    1
This is an observation that i can attest to. When we first started developing Amplify, we were so impressed by Twitter's growth, that we pretty much decided to make Amplify an application exclusively for twitter. Our messaging, sign up and user experience were all developed specifically for twitter. It's fair to say that strategically, we put all our eggs in twitter's basket. Well, for many of the reasons sited in the article this was clipped from, not anymore. I'll leave it at that for now...lots coming soon!

The end of Death
Aribeth
by Aribeth  8-15-2009    4
The psychologist Ernest Becker wrote in his pulitzer prize winning book, “The Denial of Death,” that in the face of an acute and agonizing awareness of his mortality, man has developed three main devices to sustain his sanity. These illusions act as temporary solutions to the problem of death. The Religious Solution The Religious Solution invents the concept of God and projects onto him the power to grant us what we all really want: the ability to bestow eternal life on ourselves an our loved ones; to be freed from disease, decay and death. The Romantic Solution The second illusion Becker identifies - when we no longer believe in God, we then turn our lovers into gods and goddesses. When in love, man can “forget himself in the delirium of sex, and still be marvelously quickened in the experience”. We are temporarily relieved from the drag of “the animality that haunts our victory over decay and death.” When in love, we become immortal gods.

Onion Study: 74% Of Children Tenting Out In Yard Don't Make It Through The Night
Lexica
by Lexica  8-21-2009
More: "Children should know, however, that if they hear scratching on the side of their tent, it's probably just their older brother trying to scare them," Fredericks said. "And if the scratching suddenly stops, it's most likely because their parents have gone insane and crept up from behind with this really demonic look in their eyes and slit his throat." As dire as these findings may appear, Fredericks claimed there was one way for children camping outdoors to escape their fate. "If they are able to avoid being bitten by poisonous spiders crawling around inside their sleeping bag, can keep all their fingers and toes crossed long enough to ward off Sister Mary, and manage to run back home without the inbred family of cannibal people seeing them first, they may actually stand a chance," said Fredericks, an eerie smile forming on his lips…
