Too Little, Too Late
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  Yesterday 1:33 PM    3
The comment by the woman who claimed that Obama was an Arab was the clinching justification that a large segment of the McCain supporters are deluded, gullible, and ignorant. It concerned me that people could be so easily manipulated into believing such fantastic claims. In some ways it reminded me of the frenzy I was told about in 1930's Germany against the already hated Jews and Gypsies. We've come too far in 50 years to allow this type of hate to enter back into American discourse.

Brits, U.S. Inject Capital. Save Banks. Start Socialism.
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-9-2008
Following the lead of the Aussie's (not mentioned in article), The British government this morning pledged to "injected capital," -- hundred of billions of pounds -- to rescue its banking system. U.S. Treasury Secretary says he has "broad powers," to do the same. I think this is a good idea. It sure is a better idea than buying stinking unsecured debt that may never be repaid, that is if I understand the term "injecting capital," correctly (which I think I do but it would help if these guys spoke English). Why have they come up with what sounds like, at least, a reasonable plan? I don't know...maybe it's the intense scrutiny they are under...i.e., "oversight," actually helps. Of course there is some irony in this due to the fact that government buying ownership (buying stocks) in private companies is a cornerstone idea of socialism. And this idea comes from the ultimate capitalist who oppose government intervention in any way. I find this very interesting.

European Big Four Rule Out Joint Rescue Action
merrie
by merrie  10-6-2008
The summit called for greater flexibility in accounting rules by the end of October, in line with US practices. This would be done by giving European banks "the same rules to reclassify financial instruments from the trading book to the banking book, including those already held or issued". This is a reference to a rarely used rule in the US that allows banks to record assets at an amortised cost, rather than at its current market value. This would be a way of circumventing the existing "mark-to-market" accounting rules, which critics say have contributed to a downward spiral of asset prices *Allow banks to apply mark-to-market accounting rules for assets more flexibly in line with US practices *European Commission to draw up EU rules aligning bank deposit guarantee schemes *Establish task forces to co-ordinate *Establish task forces to co-ordinate with the US authorities and others during crises *Supervisors to draw up codes of conduct on pay and risk-taking

This article gives me some hope. A bit more: "Enough total solar energy shines on the earth during a 40-minute period of time to power the entire world economy for a year. We only need to harness a tiny portion of this sunshine to make a huge difference in the world: environmentally, politically and economically."

'There Is Absolutely No Reason for Islamophobia'
arifsali
by arifsali  9-26-2008
Calls like that are welcome news to Yunus Ulusoy from the Center for Turkish Studies in Essen, which keeps track of the religiosity of Turkish Muslims. It's a demand, Ulusoy says, "that we've been making for decades because, for Muslims, faith is a very important part of their identity." In his opinion, if the school system doesn't pay any attention to this fact, it only hurts the chances of successfully integrating Muslims into German culture.

25%+ of all Pentagon money is unaccounted for
papananook
by papananook  8-10-2008    4
Why Bush & Co. love war. Little known fact: George Herbert Walker, grandfather of George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr, besides being a major financier to the Nazis along with his son-in-law Prescott Bush, was also appointed supervisor of military contracts by Woodrow Wilson. Interestingly enough, it's much easier to find out details of the family's dealings with the Nazis than it is to uncover the simple, biographical fact that the Bush dynasty has been hardwired into the finances of the Pentagon since Day One. Ripping off the nation via the Pentagon is a four generation old business for this crew. No wonder they're so good at it. 9/11 helped then both cover their tracks and take things to a new level. Wow, that's a pretty good scam for some people...I wonder where all that tax money goes? It's bad enough how they rip us off legally, let alone down the rabbit hole to...?

History Is Repeating, When Will the Masses Wake Up?
sahara
by sahara  9-23-2008    3
"At the present time, behind the scenes there is a night-and-day movement of collateral. A visiting Englishman leaving the United States a few weeks ago said things would look better here after "they cleaned up the mess at Washington." Cleaning up the mess consists of fooling the people and making them pay a second time for the bad foreign investments of the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Banks. It consists of moving that heavy load of dubious and worthless foreign paper — the bills of wig makers, brewers, distillers, narcotic drug vendors, munition makers, illegal finance drafts, and worthless foreign securities — out of the banks, and putting it on the back of American labor. That is what the Reconstruction Finance Corporation is doing now. They talk about loans to banks and railroads." ...
