POPSToo many calories send the brain off kilter The researchers report that that increased activity of the IKKß/NF-?B pathway can be divorced from obesity itself -- infusions of either glucose or fat into the brains of mice alone led to this inflammatory brain reaction. Further studies revealed that this activity in the brain leads to insulin and leptin resistance. Insulin lowers blood sugar by causing cells of the body to take it up from the bloodstream. Leptin is a fat hormone important for appetite control. Moreover, the researchers found that treatments preventing the activity of IKKß/NF-?B in the animals' brains protected them from obesity.

POPSExercise in a Pill Previous work with genetically engineered mice in the Evans lab had revealed that permanently activating a genetic switch known as PPAR delta turned mice into indefatigable marathon runners. In addition to their super-endurance, the altered mice were resistant to weight gain, even when fed a high-fat diet that caused obesity in ordinary mice. On top of their lean and mean physique, their response to insulin improved, lowering levels of circulating glucose.

POPSHuman hibernation mooted as solution to obesity The idea comes on the back of his team's discovery that the chemical 5-adenosine monophosphate, or 5-AMP, induces a state of torpor in mice, which do not usually hibernate. Lee says that a capsule or injection of 5-AMP could induce a similar state in humans, and the accompanying metabolic changes could help treat a range of conditions associated with obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and eating disorders. What to make of this? It's an extraordinary idea, but it will need to be backed by good peer-reviewed evidence if it is ever to progress from a mere suggestion.

POPSChinese Green Tea Have you tasted Chinese green tea? As you all know, green tea is the most popular types of Chinese tea. Many people, not only Chinese, consider it as the best drink for sultry summers. The main reason for this claim is the fact that green tea is cool and fights off inflammation. Many have even claimed that it relieves fever.

POPSSugary breakfast cereals may boost memory. The kids have short term, memory improvement, but it doesn't take long for the glucose to burn out and leave them empty. They also need a memory for the last few hours of school. Low GI are slow release, and can maintain the memory for much longer, though maybe without the acute rush. What can be as important are the artificial colours, flavouring, and preservatives that can play havoc with a child's metabolism. Substantial breakfasts are needed, because it is amazing how many kids either throw prepare lunches away if they don't like them, or use them to trade up. They learn about trade not nutrition.Once children are introduced to sugar they won't be happy with anything else. A sugar rush to a child, is like a shot of adrenaline to an adult
