POPSSufi Teaching Tales Folk tales have always been used in Muslim lands as a way of teaching spiritual lessons. There are a huge variety of them full of heroes, male and female, struggling through the adventure of life with courage and dignity. Many philosophers and spiritual teachers have used such stories to highlight the journey of the soul on the return to the One. Many of them are full of humour as the silly mistakes that we often make are illustrated by characters who bring home the message that we too often follow the ego (nafs) and get ourselves into serious trouble. A lot of these stories are love stories that serve as a metaphor for the soul's longing for the Lord of the Worlds and the trials it is willi...

POPSAbsinthe Goes From Banned Drug to Legal Liquor Breaux's research — finally published this spring in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (.pdf) — and that Wired story have helped change absinthe's image from drug to drink. The US has been slowly peeling away its ban, and in March, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved the sale of absinthes that were "thujone free" (containing less than 10 parts per million).

POPSThree Servicemen sculpture in Apalachicola honors Vietnam Vets "And beyond that, he wanted the sculpture to be a heartfelt and simple thank you from the citizens of this nation to the service and sacrifice of the veterans and their families." She quoted from her husband's last public speech in May 1999, a few months before his death. "By the expressions on the faces of the intensity of the strain and the anguish that was part of the Vietnam veterans experience on the battlefield and at homecoming, and by their endurance and youthful dedication to duty, they reveal themselves as true heroes," she said. She told of how the sculptor had learned from his talks with Vietnam vets that "all treasured their deep bonds of loyalty, comradeship and interdependence," or as one veteran put it, "At first we thought we were fighting for our country but soon we came to realize we were fighting for each other."

POPSThe Sins John Edward Did Not Commit You know what? I get sick and tired of the moral majority being the judge and jury of a personal situation which is between a husband and wife, especially since so many of them just love to pork it up with hot babes themselves or better yet, love getting same sex encounters in public restrooms.

POPSAl Qaeda stronger since 9/11; war makes it worse War makes them heroes, Rand report says. United police action would make them criminals. Used to be that anybody who said war wasn't the best answer was thought to be soft on terrorism. What we need to learn is that war doesn't work.

POPSBarack Obama is Mr Darcy --Maureen Dowd Dowd reports that some women won't vote for Obama because he's skinny, some because he seems haughty. That's no sillier than voting for him because he resembles Jane Austen's most popular hero, Mr Darcy. I'm not wild about the train of thought that says women vote based on fictional heroes. However, it may be an uncomfortable truth, and not only about women. Much of voter opinion is based on looks, style, and media hype--not content. I do give Dowd credit for making an unusual analogy. The "Pride & Prejudice" title fits the current politics in some ways, and Dowd correctly points out that the success of the Austen novel rests of changing the views of *both* sides.

POPSal-Qaeda Confirms Death Of Arms Expert: report DUBAI (AFP) — Al-Qaeda has confirmed the death of a chemical and biological weapons expert whose killing in a suspected US strike was reported by Pakistan, an Islamist militant website said on Sunday. Abu Khabab al-Masri was among a group of "heroes" who joined "the caravans of martyrs," said a statement signed by Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, Al-Qaeda's general commander in Afghanistan. Its authenticity could not be independently confirmed. Pakistani officials had said that a July 28 missile strike in Pakistan's South Waziristan tribal area killed Abu Khabab al-Masri, an Egyptian militant whose full name was Midhat Mursi al-Sayid Umar.

POPSChildhood "ending sooner", survey finds A survey finds that today's children stop believing in imaginary creatures much earlier than their parents did, and that many children are pressured by parents to perform well in school and extracurricular activities (this is new?).

POPSWrist-band for your comrade.
This has to be examined and commented on. I cannot imagine the Head of the Rhodesian Army issuing edicts to Selous Scouts over dress and getting away with it. Discipline is disciple, but common sense is common sense. If there is an overwhelming response from those doing the job that a matter has to be dealt with in a certain manner, then any reasonable senior rank would take that into consideration. I was told by an individual that I cannot wear my Rhodesian GSM on parade. My response..."Do you want that finger broken or do you want to clean your teeth from up your arse-hole?" Word of warning to the Marines. Collective dissent is Mutiny. There are arse-holes out there who would use QR&R's to pervert your desire to give homage to your comrades. You will not remember this, but these are the words scribed into history by our forefathers from the Great war... "Fuck 'em all. Fuck 'em all. The long and the short and the tall. Fuck all the sergeants and WO 1's. Fuck all the serg

POPSWhere Does He Get All These Wondeful Steampunk Toys?? I admit to being rather fond (actually, enamored) with the entire Steampunk Genre. I am a fan of many of the stylings that have come from one pop culture type to another... Junk stores are doing booming business these days as people hit them up for old brass fittings, watches, horns and other things to modify and adapt. We went through a similar phase with Star Wars and other Sci-Fi things in the 70a and they returned in the last decade. Super Heroes were big merchandise money makers during the WW II years, the mid 60s, and then again the late 80s with the birth of the Batman craze following the campy antics of the 60s and the dark, Gothic feel of the movie series. Super Heroes came back in a big way with X-Men. This is what I have always heard that popular culture repeats itself every generation or so... Hold on to those Slinkys, Hula Hoops, and Slip n' Slide: we may be in for a wild ride again!

POPSLady criminalised for doing RIGHT. The day after the announcement of a 17th youth has died of stab wounds, a British Court has decided that it is wrong to defend the memory and memorabilia of our past heroes, and present ones. It is right, I believe, to take appropriate action to maintain a modicum of respectability. If the article is correct then this lady showed true courage, true appreciation and is worthy of commendation not criminalisation. Had Garry Newlove survived the attack on his property, and I do not mean the attack that took his life, would he have been charged with affray? Under this regime, most certainly yes. If that drug smoking Home Secretary had an ounce of integrity, she would be knocking on Julie Lakes door and handing her a pardon in person.
