After we finished taping today's Clipiversity, Eric and I got to talking and realized that it wouldn't be that much harder to do a video show, and that there's just something compelling about seeing people on screen. We're thinking about making Clipiversity a daily video show next week. What do you think?

Anthem by Ayn Rand - LibriVox Audio book
pokkets
by pokkets  10-21-2007    4
Written in the third person, by 'Equality 72521' The story is one of a search for freedom, where the meaning of the word has been lost. Today there is often talk of the value of capitalism. As time passes, it is becoming a privilege of the very few who have it by the throat, and allowing the life to pass from any other's opportunity. It is becoming a dirty alibi. Anyone beneath the elite is subject to the principles of socialism. Ayn Rands Magnum Opus is 'Atlas Shrugged, where she explores political themes which would subsequently develop into the Philosophy of Objectivism

With so much of this going on (iTunes Store has iTunes U as well, and there must be others) why even bother going to a university for much of a degree? Shouldn't there be a reduced tuition for those who can pass a competency exam based on self-paced online study? Sort of an Internet University BA?

'iTunes university' better than the real thing
chedare
by chedare  3-5-2009    5
Students who downloaded the podcast averaged a C (71 out of 100) on the test - substantially better than those who attended the lecture, who on average mustered only a D (62). But that difference vanished among students who watched the podcast but did not take notes.Students who listened to the podcast one or more times and took notes had an average score of 77, McKinney says. To find out how much students really can learn from podcast lectures alone - mimicking a missed class - McKinney's team presented 64 students with a single lecture on visual perception, from an introductory psychology course. Half of the students attended the class in person and received a printout of the slides from the lecture. The other 32 downloaded a podcast that included audio from the same lecture synchronised with video of the slides. These students also received a printed handout of the material. The researchers told the students they would be tested on the material in a week, and they also asked

Choosing randomly?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  8-20-2008    1
The entertainment options on offer to us are almost unlimited. Trying to make an informed choice between all possible alternatives would take too long: they're all good, so why not pick one at random? But is this a warning sign of terminal decadence? The idea that so many pleasures are available to us that we're unable to choose has a hint of the last days of Rome about it." I think that in a way it is a sign of this age of information and higher availabilities. It calls for higher levels of clarity and processing. otherwise we'll be lost in translation...

The Generational Divide in Copyright Morality
wildcat
by wildcat  12-31-2007
I don’t pretend to know what the solution to the file-sharing issue is. (Although I’m increasingly convinced that copy protection isn’t it.) I do know, though, that the TV, movie and record companies’ problems have only just begun. Right now, the customers who can’t even *see* why file sharing might be wrong are still young. But 10, 20, 30 years from now, that crowd will be *everybody*. What will happen then?

Notes on a Sick Planet
invictus
by invictus  10-13-2007    2
The authors may reach a bit when they try to sound less square, likening the buying of compact fluorescent light bulbs to “an upgrade on your iTunes software.” But they make the science relevant and enjoyable with abundant visuals and conclude with some meaty ways for kids to make a difference. The old standbys are all there (switch light bulbs, recycle, use canvas bags at the grocery store). But I smiled on noticing something new: the authors suggest some “sustainable careers” kids can consider, like meteorologist and “glacial geologist.”

How Last.fm inspired a scientific breakthrough
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  9-29-2009
How does it work? At the basic level, students can "drag and drop" research papers into the site at mendeley.com, which automatically extracts data, keywords, cited references, etc, thereby creating a searchable database and saving countless hours of work. That in itself is great, but now the Last.fm bit kicks in, enabling users to collaborate with researchers around the world, whose existence they might not know about until Mendeley's algorithms find, say, that they are the most-read person in Japan in their niche specialism. You can recommend other people's papers and see how many people are reading yours, which you can't do in Nature and Science. Mendeley says that instead of waiting for papers to be published after a lengthy procedure of acquiring citations, they could move to a regime of "real-time" citations, thereby greatly reducing the time taken for research to be applied in the real world and actually boost economic growth. There are lots of research archives. For the physica
