Rediculous Propaganda from FEMA
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  10-28-2007    11
FEMA is a disaster all its own. The next president will need to give them a serious overhaul! Of all the people who shouldn't be afraid to face an ugly situation, it's FEMA's job to face disasters, not create them! Scolding is not enough for this. They should all lose their jobs. Immediately. Once again this shows that the administration only cares about pats on the back and looking out for its own interests, not in actually getting things done. Which is probably why in the last 6 years, Bush has achieved nothing except for ardent self-congratulation. These people are totally insufferable politicians! On a side note, the state department is having trouble filling positions at the Iraqi embassy. I can't think of a better place for Bush and his cronies to serve their retirements. Maybe they might actually do something for their country!

The Courage to Live Consciously
Kore7
by Kore7  9-2-2007    6
I wasn't sure which was better, Steve Pavlina's article on living your live with courage, or the quotes he used to illustrate his ideas. Either way, worth reading. How would you live if you had no fear at all? You'd still have your intelligence and common sense to safely navigate around any real dangers, but without feeling the emotion of fear, would you be more willing to take risks, especially when the worst case wouldn't actually hurt you at all? Would you speak up more often, talk to more strangers, ask for more sales, dive headlong into those ambitious projects you've been dreaming about? What if you even learned to enjoy the things you currently fear? What kind of difference would that make in your life?

The Nearest Thing to Mind Reading
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-7-2008    1
“A person can put up a good face and avoid disclosing different types of information,” he added. “You would think depressed people party less, talk less, laugh less and interact less. But the students who reported having the most depressive symptoms did those things as much as anyone else.” The researchers uncovered a few things: Stream of consciousness writing often speaks more loudly about private personality traits than do public forms of expression and those who read personal narratives written by other people can most often come up with an accurate judgment of that person’s character.

Suit seeks to force US govt to account for all royalties due individual Native Americans since 1887 on seized lands; they've been forced to accept far less than market value of drilling rights on their lands for 120 years. Government protecting business interests by paying low royalties, robbing poor people. I hope they appeal - this isn't near enough.

FOX forced to apologise for THIRD TIME in TWO Weeks
righthand
by righthand  6-13-2008    3
The apology comes just over a week after one of Fox's anchormen expressed regret for a comment on the night that Obama won the Democratic nomination. Obama, in a show of affection, lightly touched his fist against Michelle's and the anchorwoman referred to it as a "terrorist fist jab". Previously, a Fox contributor Liz Trotta had to apologise after making a joke about Obama being assassinated. The trio of apologies is embarrassing for Fox. Murdoch last month praised Obama but stopped short of endorsing him, though his New York Post came out for Obama in January.

"Honor Killings" In America
merrie
by merrie  7-24-2008    12
but multiculturalism hits a crossroads when honor killings come to America. The United States has avoided this bloodstained trend until recently. Some consider Kanwal's death the first documented honor killing here. Others point to the murder of sisters Amina and Sarah Said in Irving, Texas, on New Years' 2007. (Their MySpace page remains up. Featuring assimilated teen culture and American music, it is haunting.) Their father remains on the run from police. In upstate Monroe County just a few days ago, a girl was stabbed by her brother for wearing immodest western clothing and wanting to move to New York City. According to court documents, Waheed Allah Mohammad explained the stabbing by saying his sister was a "bad Muslim girl." "Honor killing is a misnomer," author and exile Ayaan Hirsi Ali told me. "The killing occurs because these girls have allegedly brought shame on their family. The paradox is that these are individuals who have emancipated themselves.

Lethal Egomania & the Glory of Politics
ouyangwulong

Very often activists become so wrapped up in the romance of a cause and seduced by their own image that they forget the issue that they started by advocating, and move into a realm of pure narcissistic idealism. And it is the media, with its voyeuristic bent for sensationalism over reason, that enables many of these well-meaning people to become vacuous soap-box pundits shouting to hear their own voice.

The survey came up with other odd findings: most Americans believe in prophetic dreams, 4 in 10 believe in ancient advanced civilizations like Atlantis, 3/4 of Americans think their relatives will go to heaven, and only 2.2% identified with the term Evangelical even though 1 in 3 attend churches that theologians consider Evangelical. The real bottom line was that asking someone if he is Protestant, Catholic, or Jewish isn't likely to tell you much about what that person actually believes.

Intelligence vs. Fundamentalism
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  9-8-2007    15
Isn't this the way it has always been? Blind faith, fundamentally incompatible with, and diametrically opposed to intelligence? But we shouldn't confuse faith with indoctrination. We should draw a distinction between the blind faith of fundamentalism and the true faith of personal realization. After all, doesn't faith come from experience? Although it is personal and subjective, it is ultimately a judgment of the things we have seen in the world and the conflicts we have felt in our hearts? Doesn't faith spring from exploration? Isn't it confirmed by its challenges? Farris and others in the home-school movement think of enforced ignorance as protective, but isn't it actually a weakness? They think rigid ideological conformity can help Christianity "capture America" (wow, a nation that is already over 80% Christian, that should be tough!) But are they helping it or hurting it? Who do they resemble the closest? Thomas Aquinas or the Spanish Inquisition?

Gingrich Had Affair During Clinton Probe

"The president of the United States got in trouble for committing a felony in front of a sitting federal judge," the former Georgia congressman said of Clinton's 1998 House impeachment on perjury and obstruction of justice charges. "I drew a line in my mind that said, 'Even though I run the risk of being deeply embarrassed, and even though at a purely personal level I am not rendering judgment on another human being, as a leader of the government trying to uphold the rule of law, I have no choice except to move forward and say that you cannot accept ... perjury in your highest officials." "There were times when I was praying and when I felt I was doing things that were wrong. But I was still doing them," he said in the interview. "I look back on those as periods of weakness and periods that I'm ... not proud of." Gingrich's congressional career ended in 1998 when he abruptly resigned from Congress and after being reprimanded by the House ethics panel...
