POPSMcCain Puts His Chips on PA, WI, and MN The problem with this strategy is that it's insane. Minnesota, for example, is so far from competitive that Politico's swing state map doesn't even list it anymore. I went to Electoral-Vote.com and got these numbers -- McCain is the lower number in each case: Minnesota - 54%-43% Pennsylvania - 50%-43% Wisconsin - 49%-43% Maybe PA and WI make sense, but MN? Seriously, I don't see the reasoning.

POPSPoll: Obama Leads Wisconsin This one's a little personal. If I see one more electoral map that shows the Badger state as a toss-up, I'm going to hurt someone. Wisconsin isn't going McCain, it hasn't gone GOP since the Reagan landslide. Other fun results; Bush is really unpopular here -- only a 15% job approval rating. More evidence that McCain's done here. He's still spending money here, though. You can't watch TV for an hour without seeing a McCain ad. Glad to see him blowing that cash on a lost cause.

POPSPollster.com: Electoral Vote Map, 9-29 "Obama's lead is widening basically everywhere, except PA and FL. He continues to maintain a lead in solid electoral votes." Somewhat satisfying, because the primary-days pitch was that O couldn't win big states. I count, though (check me here), in states with 10 or more votes: McCain, 6; Obama, 10; toss-up, 5.

POPSSexy? plain? who chooses? "In women, preferences for male faces, voices, body odors and behavior change over the course of the menstrual cycle as estrogen levels rise and fall. Our work with these songbirds shows a possible neural basis for those changes" Put aside the specific hormone, what is pointed here is how much happens in the background of one's perception, that has control of what is perceived as very real.... and the 'changes' that we experience must be doubted.

POPS'Chemical equator' keeps southern air clean The virtual map says it all. Now it means the approach to the solution of the pollution problem needs to be tackled in different ways in each hemisphere. Atmospheric pollution is only one problem. More investigation needs to be done into the nature of oceanic pollution. it did make me wonder of the Nuclear Fusion experiments on Mururoa (Aopuni) and Bikini atolls in French Polynesia last Century. The first nuclear test was conducted on July 2, 1966, code named Aldebaran. France abandoned nuclear testing in the atmosphere in 1974 and moved testing underground in the midst of intense world pressure. A total of 147 underground nuclear tests were conducted at Mururoa and Fangataufa. This practice created much controversy as cracking of the atolls was discovered, A 1979 test conducted at half the usual depth caused a large submarine landslide on the southwest rim of the atoll. Just somehow seemed relevant

POPSDoes Iran's President Want Israel Wiped Off The Map? (cont.)When our dear Imam said that the regime must be removed, many of those who claimed to be politically well-informed said it was not possible. All the corrupt governments were in support of the regime when Imam Khomeini started his movement. ]]] and said the removal of the regime was not possible. But our people resisted and it is 27 years now that we have survived without a regime dependent on the United States. The tyranny of the East and the West over the world should have to end, but weak people who can see only what lies in front of them cannot believe this. Who would believe that one day we could witness the collapse of the Eastern Empire? But we could watch its fall in our lifetime. And it collapsed in a way that we have to refer to libraries because no trace of it is left. Imam said Sadda

POPSPaul Newman, actor who personified cool, dies My deepest sympathy to his wife Joanne Woodward and the rest of his friends and family. "Sometimes God makes perfect people," fellow "Absence of Malice" star Sally Field said, "and Paul Newman was one of them." We will miss our friend Paul Newman, but are lucky ourselves to have known such a remarkable person," Robert Forrester, vice chairman of Newman's Own Foundation, said in a statement. "Our father was a rare symbol of selfless humility, the last to acknowledge what he was doing was special," his daughters said in a written statement. "Intensely private, he quietly succeeded beyond measure in impacting the lives of so many with his generosity." Newman is survived by his wife, five children, two grandsons and his older brother Arthur.

POPSUsing AI to find biomarkers of calorie restriction Novel artificial intelligence methodologies were applied to analyze gene expression microarray data gathered from mice under a calorie restriction (CR) regimen. The data were gathered from three previously published mouse studies; these datasets were merged together into a single composite dataset for the purpose of conducting a broader-based analysis. The result was a list of genes that are important for the impact of CR on lifespan, not necessarily in terms of their individual actions but in terms of their interactions with other genes. Furthermore, a map of gene interrelationships was provided, suggesting which intergene interactions are most important for the effect of CR on life extension.

POPSFederal Minerals Management Report: Wells Drilled
Five of the leased wells found natural gas three decades ago August 20, 2008 Lautenberg and Menendez top 'porkers' New Jersey Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez were the No. 1 and No. 2 "top porkers" cited by Citizens Against Government Waste this week for the targeted spending items they sponsored in a transportation and housing bill approved last month by the Senate Appropriations Committee. CAGW said Lautenberg sponsored $85.4 million in earmarks and Menendez $83.9 million, but that could be misleading because Lautenberg cosponsored all of Menendez's items, so you can't add the two numbers together. In other words, the total outlay to New Jersey is $85.4 million -- and $75 million of that is for one project -- a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River. CAGW didn't list the items it considered pork, and it never does. A database compiled by Taxpayers for Common Sense does list the projects, however. http://njmg.typepad.com/herbjackson/2008/08/lautenberg

POPSMcCain bounce evaporates Obama is now at or above poll levels prior to RNC, and in D, R, and toss-up states. I think the roll is beginning, and I still think it could be a landslide.

POPSCBS: "West Virginia Most Neurotic State in Union" A CBS News report (correction: not Couric) stated this at the conclusion of a piece tonight (Sept. 23) based upon this study here which considers that people have a personality within their states, or flock together with those of similar. While the headline of the story underscores New York as neurotic, West Virginia scored highest. Note the study describes a "stress belt": The results revealed clear patterns of personalities - neuroticism is highest in the east along a line stretching from Maine to Louisiana - the "stress belt". There is evidence of this in the crazy way people drive in West Virginia and the high auto insurance rates even though it is a small population center. (Ohio insurance rates are much cheaper for example). West Virginia has been a place of conflict since it was formed, splitting Virginia in two. The "mountain state" has been a tumultuous region, "wild and wonderful", and still untamed. See how other states score.

POPSElection 08: How's it looking? Mouse over states to get current numbers and history. I'm surprised that WV is only "barely Republican;" FL now within margin of error; Obama expands nationwide Gallup lead by 1, to six points, since RNC. Overall so far, a narrow but widening Obama win. See map key at bottom of clip.
