The Daily Show vs. Blovation Fest 2008!
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  8-19-2008    1
I've been watching the Daily Show since its first episode, and I started taking it serriously when Jon upped the IQ quotient by replacing Craig Killborne. Now the show pretty much only does indie film makers, political wonks, and third world presidents. How cool is that? The only people who do more serious interviews are Charlie Rose and Bill Moyers, and actually, Bill Moyers described Jon as "The Mark Twain of our time." But why did I clip? for the "Blovation Fest" Quote, which by the way, will be the festival of avant garde noise-punk music I attempt to put on this fall. ;)

Exercise in a Pill
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-31-2008
Previous work with genetically engineered mice in the Evans lab had revealed that permanently activating a genetic switch known as PPAR delta turned mice into indefatigable marathon runners. In addition to their super-endurance, the altered mice were resistant to weight gain, even when fed a high-fat diet that caused obesity in ordinary mice. On top of their lean and mean physique, their response to insulin improved, lowering levels of circulating glucose.

Smog Rule: Aussies Can Pull Out Of Games
merrie
by merrie  7-28-2008
Beijing has been cloaked in pollution for the past month and pollution levels have been at their highest in the past week - ironically ever since the authorities introduced strict new measures to try and improve the air quality. These include shutting down polluting industries nearby and introducing an odds and evens system for car users. Meanwhile, the Greek modern pentathlon association has filed an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport contesting the right of Australian modern pentathlete Angie Darby to compete in the Olympics. This is the last final appeal in a saga that has been going for a month, but Darby will not be allowed to come to Beijing until her status is confirmed.

Media Ignores Kucinich Impeachment Push
Wisco
by Wisco  6-10-2008
The piece goes on: Kucinich support John Kusumi responded angrily at OpEdNews, writing, "The most important thing going happened on Monday night. An event that matters greatly to the course of history and to all Americans. Did you hear about it? Did ABC, CBS, and NBC break into normal programming with special coverage? Are there special alerts and bulletins on the cable news networks, where people can see them? No, no, and no!" I just checked CNN's front page -- no mention of Kucinich. I did learn that more people are sleeping at work . CNN; news you can't possibly use.

Can You Catch Up on Lost Sleep?
Mohir
by Mohir  5-16-2008    3
The good news is that, like all debt, with some work, sleep debt can be repaid—though it won't happen in one extended snooze marathon. Tacking on an extra hour or two of sleep a night is the way to catch up. For the chronically sleep deprived, take it easy for a few months to get back into a natural sleep pattern, says Lawrence J. Epstein, medical director of the Harvard-affiliated Sleep HealthCenters. Go to bed when you are tired, and allow your body to wake you in the morning (no alarm clock allowed). You may find yourself catatonic in the beginning of the recovery cycle: Expect to bank upward of ten hours shut-eye per night. As the days pass, however, the amount of time sleeping will gradually decrease.

Masai warriors and the London Marathon
mickfinn
by mickfinn  4-2-2008    1
The warriors, who arrive in Britain next week for the race on Sunday April 13, have also been advised not to be too offended by the brief running attire of their fellow competitors in the marathon. "You will see many people who are wearing only small clothes and you will wonder why they are cold and may think they are being disrespectful. "This is normal for England, especially when it is sunny or in the evening. However, it is illegal to show certain parts of the body and for this reason it is important that you wear underpants if you are wearing your blankets." The guide provides a tour of a typical home, complete with description of what happens in a bathroom and at meal times. "People in England eat with knives, forks and spoons. If you want to use just a spoon or fork or hands then it is not a worry. "Many people drink alcohol in England. They do so at bars, at homes or at clubs - the English equivalent to a Masai party. "When people drink they sillier or

"As humans we have a difficult time comprehending large numbers, and vast collections of people perhaps in particular. There is something simply surreal about a pilgrimage that attracts more people than the population of Texas or a festival that draws thirty thousand revelers deep into one of the harshest deserts on Earth. These three events are vastly different in terms of geography, history and purpose but are all impressive in their own way and right as these images show."

John McCain's Money Troubles Continue
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  3-23-2008    1
More: Virtually every campaign observer agrees that the Arizona senator, who alluded to his lackluster and unenthusiastic fundraising efforts last spring, is going to have to at least double his $11 million monthly take to hopefully stay competitive. Me: Looks like tepid support in the republican base for McCain. A devout republican cousin of mine called my Dad to discuss Obama as my cousin thinks he is going to vote for Obama. Cousin says he doesn't believe another 100 years of war in Iraq is in our country's best interest. So people are answering poll questions but they aren't reaching into their pockets to pony up the cash.
