Line In Sand For Same Sex Couples
debbyski
by debbyski  7-16-2007    2
In 2004 eleven states had measure on their ballots to ban same-sex marriage. Sadly, they all passed. But they didn't just spontaneously appear. All eleven were organized by religious and conservative political leaders as key to their efforts to turn out the born-again vote for George W. Bush. And it worked. Indeed, had gay marriage not been on the ballot in Ohio, Bush would probably not have been reelected. There is no doubt religious conservatives have turned same-sex marriage into a hot-button political issue. But they have been less persuasive in trying to turn it into a moral issue.

Trust Me
debbyski
by debbyski  12-23-2007    1
"I do not draw attention to these facts to chastise the candidates but to chastise the public. The idea that anyone would base his or her vote on a candidate's "trustworthiness" is absurd. But the idea that fence-sitting voters would or should withhold their votes from Clinton because she is, God forbid, not trustworthy implies that this is somehow an aberrant characteristic for a presidential candidate. Of all the things I have read about this never-ending campaign, this is by far the most hilarious. If you can't stand the sight of Hillary Clinton because she's too liberal, too rich, too haughty, went to Wellesley or simply because she's a woman, at least be man enough to come out and admit it. Don't hide behind some bogus "trustworthiness" rationalization."

AARP looks after graying music lovers
gingembre
by gingembre  7-19-2007    1
Interesting look at how boomers continue to affect the music industry to the point where even AARP is catering to boomer tastes in music radio (counter to commercial radio which is struggling "to connect with younger listeners who find most of their music online"). a bit more from the source: "At Amazon.com, the five best-selling artists in the online merchant's history are the Beatles, U2, Norah Jones, Johnny Cash and Diana Krall. The top five sellers last year included Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Andrea Bocelli — all staples of the boomer crowd"
