POPSEnglish Bulldog Is A Hero: Saves Kittens From Lake Napoleon got a much deserved hero’s welcome at the adoption center as crowds gathered to praise the brave bulldog and cuddle the rescued kittens. English Bulldogs are notoriously bad swimmers. With a giant head and chest compared to a lighter tail end, they have a tendency to go bottoms up in the water. It’s hard to keep that head up above the waves when it’s the largest part of your body! Most owners are very aware of this problem, and will take care to see that their dogs have a good life vest on if they’re going to be boating or there’s a chance the bulldog could end up in some deep water without someone right at hand to save them if they look like they’re starting to struggle. Don't call me Napoleon, call me Churchill

POPSAw, Shucks, It's just a Li'l Ol' Constitution! Credit SF Chron columnist Mark Morford for this apt description: After all, the right has its own heaping bucket of problems right now, not the least of which is the weakest and craziest and least palatable field of GOP contenders in 50 years. There's the chipper creationist nutball who loves him some Chuck Norris, the stupefied Mormon mannequin who simply cannot believe the world is so icky and complicated, the doddering Iraq-loving war vet who seems to be getting more unstable by the minute, and the cross-dressing former New York mayor who has "9/11" tattooed on his ego in fake blood. And oh yes, a zany old anti-choice libertarian who somehow keeps raising piles of cash and sending fascinating postcards from the edge of political reason. Cool!

POPSIs our universe fine-tuned for life? Claims of fine-tuning have generally been based on what happens when you vary a single characteristic of the universe, say the strength of gravity, while holding all others constant. That, says Adams, is too artificial a scenario to tell you anything about whether there are other universes that can support life. "The right way to do the problem is to start from scratch," he says. "You have to turn all the knobs and find out what happens."

POPSBacteria make major evolutionary shift in the lab In the meantime, the experiment stands as proof that evolution does not always lead to the best possible outcome. Instead, a chance event can sometimes open evolutionary doors for one population that remain forever closed to other populations with different histories.

POPSReligion is a product of evolution, software suggests Another contends that religion benefited our ancestors. Rather than being a by-product of other brain functions, it is an adaptation in its own right. In this explanation, natural selection slowly purged human populations of the non-religious. To determine if it was possible for religion to emerge as an adaptation, Dow wrote a simple computer program that focuses on the evolutionary benefits people receive from their interactions with one another.

POPSAre People Finally Starting to Smarten Up When It Comes to Coulter? Three papers so far are dropping her, and I understand she is beginning to lose invitations to speak to certain groups. Could this be the beginning of the end for this sick-o? This is the same thing that happened to "Dr." Laura. She went from being the be all and end all of conservative talk on hundreds of radio stations, and was given her own TV show. Then, because of her gay slander and hate-speech, her column was dropped from many papers, her TV show canceled, and her radio show is heard on only a fraction of the stations it used to be on in her hey day. As the old saying goes....every do has his/her day.

POPSChristians Call Out "Pro-Life" Hypocrites On SCHIP The spots which features a mother urging her representative to support SCHIP, will primarily air on Christian and talk radio stations from Monday Oct. 15 to Wednesday, Oct. 17 in advance of a critical October 18th Congressional vote to override President Bush’s veto of the bi-partisan SCHIP legislation. Chris Korzen, executive director of Catholics United said, Building a true culture of life requires public policies that promote the welfare of the most vulnerable. At the heart of the Christian faith is a deep and abiding concern for the need of others. Pro-life Christians who serve in Congress should honor this commitment by supporting health care for poor children. Make these politicians pay for their hypocrisy.

POPSWhy Americans Should Never Be Allowed To Travel A woman called to make reservations, "I want to go from Chicago to Hippopotamus, New York" The agent was at a loss for words. Finally, the agent: "Are you sure that's the name of the town?" "Yes, what flights do you have?" replied the customer. After some searching, the agent came back with, "I'm sorry, ma'am, I've looked up every airport code in the country and can't find a Hippopotamus anywhere." The customer retorted, "Oh don't be silly. Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!" The agent scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, "You don't mean Buffalo, do you?" "That's it! I knew it was a big animal!"
