Surprising Activity Discovered at Yellowstone Supervolcano
invictus
by invictus  3-15-2007
What the researchers think is happening, on a short-term basis at least, is that the bulging Yellowstone hotspot north of the Tetons is pushing against the north edge of Jackson Hole and jamming it against the mountains. (This is also causing the southwest part of the Yellowstone plateau, under the hotspot, to slide downhill at a rate of one-sixth of an inch each year.).

New evidence on how birds took flight
pokkets
by pokkets  1-23-2008    1
Their research suggests that flight evolved with critical changes seen in fossilized shoulder bones, among late theropod dinosaurs, and early avians, and describe the fundamental wing stroke as plesiomormhic - meaning an ancestral characteristic. The researchers attached points on ten points on the bird's bodies and digitized the results. They found that the wing stroke fell within a narrow arc of 19 degrees, and the bird shifted it's body to perform it's aerobatics. They draw an analogy with the helicopter, where the agility does not depend on the angle of the rotor blades, but through modifying engine power, and shifting the body using the tail rotor. Reminds me of the helicopter designed by Leonardo da Vinci. then, until the Wright Bros, it seemed people just tried to make 'flying machines' too complicated.

Democrat wins Montana Senate Seat
Kore7
by Kore7  11-8-2006    6
That brings the total to 50 Democrat seats in the Senate, 49 Republicans. It Virginia goes Democrat also, that would bring the ratio to 51-49 and the sweep of Congress would be complete. (Democrat Webb has already declared victory there, and even with a recount, it seems highly unlikely the numbers would change enough to matter.)

Disappearance of the Ganges
Deepti
by Deepti  12-13-2006    2
Much of the river water comes from underneath the glacier. If the glacier at Gaumukh does continue to recede or melt away, and if the Ganges would ever cease its flow or begin to dry up, it would certainly mean the end of an era and a drastic effect on the spiritual culture as we have known it in India. Indeed, it would never be the same.

"The people I see on the street are all white and they have no problem voting for a man whose father is black. It's what he stands for - he's authentic, he isn't pandering and he's telling us the truth - that's why people here are voting for him and that's why he'll win Montana."

Jimmy Carter - "Hillary supporters must accept outcome of pledged delegates"
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  4-29-2008    9
More: Mr Carter emphasised that he and many other super-delegates would not countenance this. “It would be undemocratic if the super-delegates blatantly went against the decision of Democratic voters across the nation. "And I think that many super-delegates who have not yet declared their preference have the same feeling that I do, including the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. She’s said over and over that whoever gets the most delegates by June 3rd ought to be the nominee.” It would be “too bad” and damaging to the party if the battle went to the nomination, he said. The role of super-delegates, he argued, was to swing behind the winner chosen by the voters and not to usurp them.

Yellowstone virus intrigues researchers
pokkets
by pokkets  11-14-2007
The virus eats the bacteria in the hot springs. Known as a bacteriophage, or 'phage' from a group of viruses that eats only bacteria, researchers, are intrigued as to how they evolved to be able to survive in the hot springs. They can travel in steam. Bacteriophages are considered to be the most widely distributed and diverse entities in the biosphere. It is also believed they infect up to 70% of marine bacteria. They have been used as an alternative to antibiotics in what was the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and have been seen as a hope against some drug resistant bacteria. So far tests with MRSA have not been promising, as the virus that attacks MRSA, also contains the same toxin.

Matt Taibbi: Full Metal McCain
dulios
by dulios  6-18-2008    3
You'd never know it from listening to McCain, whose kickoff speech is the same election-year diatribe that Republicans have been giving for decades, one long broadside against those goddamned overgrown Sixties weenie liberals who hate the flag, love the bomb-tossing enemies of America and are bent on the twin goals of ending the system of free enterprise and placing every aspect of our lives under government control. McCain pegs Obama as a man who wants to take America "backward," to the failed ideas of the Sixties. "I'm surprised that a young man has bought into so many failed ideas!" he says, to furious applause. Then, spitting out a forced, ugly laugh that he must have practiced many (but not enough) times in the bathroom mirror of the Straight Talk Express, he adds, "That's not change we can believe in!"

Congressional staffer "hired" hackers to change grades

Todd Schriber approached two "hackers" to break into his alma mater's system and change his grades. The two hackers post their e-mail exchange with Schriber on their website (including Schriber's pictures of squirrels). It turns out Schriber's a staffer for Montana Congressman Denny Rehberg. I am guessing someone is going to lose their job pretty soon. Unfortunate that there are no pigeons but this works nicely and proves to us that you are legit.

Hillary's Bitter Victory
merrie
by merrie  5-10-2008    3
Is there any relief in sight? When will this thing end? The short answer to this question is no, there isn't. Watching this scene, I was struck suddenly by the genius of the Clinton campaign — and also felt myself beginning to understand why this Obama-Clinton contest may yet prove to be one of those defining cultural clashes that come along once a generation or so, like Bryan-Darrow or Ali-Frazier. what we have in Hillary Clinton: a once-in-a-generation political pugilist who, like her much smoother adversary, is amazingly capable of turning weakness into strength. Pitted against physical beauty and inspirational rhetoric, Hillary made herself the champion of everything stylistically ordinary, superficially unimpressive and ignored. And while her opponent won all the attention and admiration, all the teen-idol gushings of the beautiful people, she went for something deeper — resentment at the lack of those same things.

Climate Change Is Already Affecting the West's Water
papananook
by papananook  8-25-2008    6
Unless it slaps them in the face, the typical American can't be bothered by an abstract threat. If there's a global warming event -- a mammoth hurricane, tornado, or forest fire -- in our neighborhood, then we get concerned. From this perspective, the loss of a few thousand acres of ice in a remote corner of Montana hardly seems significant. Most of us don't see it as a danger sign. But it is. Disappearing glaciers is a harbinger of huge problems. In the West, the most obvious is drought.
