POPSNIES Kids' Pages - Sing-Along Songs Midis & Lyrics Cool government web site that has all sorts of stuff for kids, one of those things being an index of lyrics and tunes to Sing-Alongs. I have been having a blast finding songs we used to sing at the summer picnics my neighborhood (Capital Hill, Seattle, Wa) used to have in the 70's. They were hosted by the Bullit sp? family, former owners of KING 5 TV. I just happened to be lucky enough to be best friends with someone who lived accross the street from them. We always sang songs when it started getting dark. I have a lot of good memories about those picnics. They were nice people too. One year they paid for me to go to summer camp because my family couldn't afford it. We didn't ask, I think they heard if from one of my friends.

POPSThe Phantom Of The Kabukiza Although the title is a play on one of the most famous Western musicals, "The Phantom of the Opera," and both involve ethereal beings in a musical context, "Kabukiza no Kaijin" is an entirely original production written by Kano and Saburo Fukushima. It follows a boy who was secretly adopted into a famous kabuki family, becomes a star and then complicates things by having a taboo love affair with a much older female actress in the rival contemporary theater world. It's not only the play's story that is appealing. It is also replete with music and dance, colorful kimono costumes and plenty of jokes and black humor about the absurdities of the theater world. "Kabukiza no Kaijin" runs March 15-25 (times vary) at Space Zero, B1F Zenrosai Kaikan, 2-12-10 Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku. The theater is a 5-minute walk from JR Shinjuku Station's South Exit.

POPSHair Redux The New Age dawned in the sixties and brought us this theatrical gem that shocked a nation. It's got the music and message but lacks nudity. How droll.

POPSLock Up The Kids -- It's Xanadu The Musical The business of turning hit movies into Broadway musicals (Hairspray, Legally Blonde, Disney's Tarzan, etc.) took a surprising turn with Tuesday's debut of Xanadu. The original 1980 film was a cheeseball classic starring Olivia Newton John on rolling skates and music by the Electric Light Orchestra -- not exactly what you'd expect to see on the Great White Way. But surprise! Variety lavishes praise on the musical for its deft staging and knowing humor: "With a complicitous wink at the audience that's never overplayed, the creatives and cast at every turn cheekily point up the irony of charging Rialto prices for recycled trash." - Louis Hau

POPStheatre breaks Theatre breaks are proving one of the most popular ways to see a west end show. It's great to retire to a top london hotel after a theatrical performance has finished, rather than returning to reality!
